It’s International Women’s Day today.

While the day looks at positive achievements in women’s rights activism, the day also acts as a reminder of continued gender inequality around the world. And in South Africa, where the scourge of gender violence has seen outrage, shock and despair this year, the day may serve as yet another reminder that more needs to be done to remedy the inequalities plaguing us.

Commemorating International Women’s Day, the Drumming Campaign by the City of Johannesburg and Amnesty International South Africa will see hundreds of drummers on Rissik Street Bridge, in a protest against the high levels of violence in South African society. There are two other demonstrations planned in Johannesburg today: the Right2Know Campaign protests over the Protection of State Information Bill at 12:30 this afternoon outside Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the Democratic Alliance will be staging a march of Men against Rape at 8:00 from the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Parktown to Constitution Hill.
