On Monday 30 January, a group of Wynberg girls went to the Maynardville Open Air Theatre to see this year’s Shakespeare production: A Comedy of Errors, directed by Matthew Wild. The play was given an Asian twist – the bright costumes, exotic setting and theatrical interpretation of the original screenplay was influenced by 1970’s Kung Fu movies. This accentuated the farcical nature of the play, and enabled the audience to understand and appreciate Shakespearean humour. The plot revolves around two sets of twins who were separated at a young age. When they begin to look for one another, they end up in the same town. Classic Shakespearean humour surrounding mistaken identities and witty word-play ensues.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the play – it was easy to understand, well-acted and highly amusing. A talented cast and unusual setting certainly grabbed the audience’s attention. No doubt it has improved our understanding and love of Shakespearean texts!
