INJURIES ON SCHOOL PREMISES
- This includes injuries on school premises or injuries while learners are under supervision of school on outings etc.
- The teacher responsible ie: the teacher present at the time (or summoned to deal with the situation if no teacher was actually present) must enter all the particulars in the file kept for the purpose in the secretary’s office, called Injury report.
- All the particulars MUST be filled in.
NOTE
- There are two forms, one is specifically for sport injuries and these must be listed and filed separately.
INJURY PROCEDURE
- In extreme emergencies phone SECURI-MED 685 7924 they will send a trained medical person immediately.
- Other cases: Ice packs are kept in the staffroom, office, and hockey clubhouse fridge. A complete first aid kit is in the office and most sports coaches have their own kits.
- The patient must be taken to Wynberg Hospital or Victoria Casualty as soon as possible, if serious and the parent must be phoned immediately.
- Once there, life sustaining procedure follows at once, ie: tetanus, drip, treatment, shock, suspected fracture X-rays are taken.
- The hospital contacts doctors of private patients or Medical Aid patients and asks if they may proceed with treatment or if the doctor is able to come and take over ie: stitches, setting fractures etc. If the patient’s doctor has not arrived within one hour of being contacted, he/she should be contacted again or if life is in jeopardy, the hospital doctors will proceed further. If a parent accompanies a minor child his/her consent for further treatment may be required.
