It has been an exciting few weeks for the Senior Debating Team. After being undefeated in the Rotary Debating League preliminary rounds and having high speaker scores for their debates, the team qualified for the Western Cape Provincial Debating competition that took place on the weekends of the 12th and 19th of August. This event took place at UCT and it is a highly prestigious one as the speakers are competing to be selected as trialists for the provincial squad that will represent the Western Cape at the National School’s Debating Championships at the end of the year.

Stacey Goliath (Grade 12) , Jasmine Kennedy (Grade 10), Mikayla Schilder (Grade 11) and Stacey Muzanya (Grade 11) represented Wynberg at this event and performed well in the highly pressurised environment. The girls definitely learnt a lot, and although Wynberg did not progress to the quarter finals, the girls have to be commended for their determination and skill shown over the two weekends. We now excitedly wait to hear their individual speaker rankings which are to be announced shortly.

The Senior Team, however, did manage to progress to the octo-finals in the Rotary Debating League and take on Springfield on the 21st August at Bishops! This is very exciting and well deserved as the girls have been working tirelessly throughout the year to reach their goal of breaking in Rotary and qualifying for Provincials, all of which they managed to accomplish and far exceeded their own expectations when they managed to win all of their preliminary debates!

We wish them luck for the octo-final on Monday night and hope that next year’s debating season will be as successful.
