“Whoever writes English is involved in a struggle that never lets up even for a sentence. He is struggling against vagueness, against obscurity, against the lure of the decorative adjective, against the encroachment of Latin and Greek, and, above all, against the worn-out phrases and dead metaphors with which the language is cluttered up.” — George Orwell
We, the English Department at Wynberg Girls’ High School, aim to produce women who are able to grow through reading: to explore other nations and cultures and opinions. Our hope is for the girls of our school to be able to contribute to the world as writers and critical thinkers and to become articulate human beings who are well-read individuals. Despite the competition from television, cellphones and computers, we believe that technology and the written word can exist side by side.
English is universal: from the opening of the latest Harry Potter novel to the wonders of the classics. By exploring media in their various forms – from film to the newspaper – our learners will be exposed to the power of language and be equipped to face the challenges not only of tertiary education, but also of the world at large.
