French and Italian

“Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow.”  ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

French and Italian are offered as an enrichment course in Grades 8 and 9 at Second Additional Language level.  Learners choosing to take either of these languages do not need any prior knowledge of that language.  The emphasis is on communication and understanding and attention is paid to the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).  Extensive use is made of audio-visual and computer resources.

A basic knowledge of a foreign language is useful to learners who plan to travel, those who are likely to interact with foreign tourists to South Africa (eg. in the hospitality industry) and those who go into business.  Learners will also be exposed to a dynamic and vibrant culture, different from their own.  It is never too late to learn another language – it is a sign of respect to others but it is also a rewarding experience which can open up a whole new world to the learner.

A maximum of 30 learners can be accommodated in each of the Second Additional Language classes and selection is based on the Grade 7 English marks of the learners.
