“Geography is important because we are inextricably linked to the world we live in. We can only live on this planet with a knowledge of how it works and a commitment to respect it. ” - Anon
Geography is a very dynamic subject and our aim is to make this subject relevant and linked to current events and global issues which the students can relate to in their daily lives. We study all the natural global phenomena occurring around the world such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods etc, often as and when they happen. With the use of our interactive smart boards, we can sometimes watch the devastation and results of these events as they unfold. This makes learning about our planet so much more meaningful. We focus on the all important issue of climate change and how it affects the world from a local to global scale. Development Issues and the many social problems occurring as a result of rapid population growth and urbanisation is very relevant in a country such as South Africa We also study examples of other countries around the world.
Field trips are an integral part of the Geography syllabus. Students can experience and gain an understanding of what has been studied in the classroom.
Geography develops basic skills such as Maths, reading and public speaking where our students learn to express their opinions on many issues. Learners are also taught the use of Geographical Information Systems which is a rapidly growing technology with many future job opportunities available.
Other job opportunities for which the study of Geography would be useful could include Meteorology, Climatology, Environmental Management, Urban Planning , Disaster Risk Management, Marine Biology, Astrology, Nature Conservation and many other fields that can be explored after studying Geography.
