‘A nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it.’ - Winston Churchill (adapted from George Santayana)
At Wynberg Girls’ High School we study and teach History for the following reasons:
- In order to understand and appreciate the linkages between the past, present, and future.
- In order to convey the crucial idea that the course of history can be changed by human agency.
- In this way, to help make responsible citizens of all our learners.
- To cultivate in our learners a sense of empathy with those from other backgrounds, societies, and even time periods.
- To develop historical imagination and historical skills, such as an understanding of chronology and cause and effect.
- To teach the skills of research and the construction and presentation of an argument, especially through essay-writing, discussion, and debate.
- To develop in our learners a respect for and tolerance of other points of view, a key democratic value.
In addition to the standard curricula, we also teach the Cambridge University AS Levels course at Grade 11 level. For the first time, we will have two AS Levels classes in 2012.
