Introduction
Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~ Berthold Auerbach
The Wynberg Music Department has three full-time music staff and five part-time music staff. We offer tuition in the following instruments: piano, violin, viola, saxophone, voice, flute, recorder, clarinet, guitar and all brass instruments.
As music is a performing art, all subject music pupils participate in one or more of the following group activities: Choir; Vocal Ensemble; Orchestra; Jazz Band; Marimba Band; Flute, Baroque, String, Guitar, Saxophone or Clarinet Ensemble.
The computer programmes used are Finale, Cubase and Band in a Box. Pupils must compose and record their own compositions using these programmes. Band in a Box is also used to improve their aural skills.
Regular public and school performances take place. Learners are given the opportunity to perform in assemblies, music lunch-time concerts (which are held every Wednesday in the school hall – all subject music learners must perform here), evening concerts, eisteddfods (both the vocal and flute ensemble have won prizes at the Cape town Eisteddfod) and various music festivals. All music students are encouraged to enter into external practical and theory music exams. It is pleasing to note that the number of learners entering these exams has grown.
In 2011 our Music Ensembles travelled to Beijing to attend the “Tutti World Youth Music” festival. Pupils were given master classes by performing experts on their instruments and were given the opportunity to perform in front of other visiting schools. This enhanced the playing standard of the participants. At the same time they enjoyed the sight-seeing trips after the master classes and made many new friends.
Our Music Department has a cozy and friendly atmosphere. Every opportunity is given to the learners so that they can improve their technical and performing skills. Each year has seen our numbers grow so that we have become a vibrant part of our school.
