On the 21st of February 2012 Wynberg Girls’ hosted its first Dads’ and Daughters’ Challenge! It was based on the American TV show Minute to Win It, in which contestants take part in 60-second challenges involving commonly used household items.

Our schools’ version of the game had 8 challenges, each growing increasingly difficult.

Teams could choose whether Dad or Daughter would complete the task. Points were awarded to teams who were not disqualified, eliminated or who broke their household item, and completed the challenge within 60 seconds.

Congratulations to Micaela Diedericks and her father who won a R500 gift voucher, Engen car wash vouchers, tickets to the Whacky Wheels Fun Day, Tiffany Hager and her father who won an Elephant Trunk-In-Hand walk for two, Engen car wash vouchers and dinner for two at Cattle Baron and third position – a place fought for by ten teams – won Engen car wash vouchers and dinner for two at Cattle Baron. At the end of the evening, everyone walked away with a gift bag.

The challenge aimed to create a place for girls to spend quality time with their fathers in a competitive but fun environment where they were forced to be a real TEAM! Some were there for the light hearted fun and laughs, and others came to WIN in matching outfits. The evening was a great success and left many wanting more!

Huge thanks to Mrs Chikte, Engen, Cattle Baron, the Elephant Sanctuary, the parents and learners who participated, the Tech Team and the Occasions Team for all their hard work.

Watch this space as we upload more images during the day!

On the 20 February Wynberg Girls’ High School hosted the first our our Information Evenings for Grade Sevens. The evening started off with performances from a number of cultural clubs and societies within the pillar. Amongst those performing were the Choir and Vocal Ensemble, the Drama Department, our Jazz Band and Baroque Ensemble, the Unbuntu Society, performers from the Dance Society and our Arts and Culture Grade Nines.

One of the items performed by our Jazz Band

After this Mrs Harding addressed the parents and Grade 7 learners. She stressed the importance of finding the right school for the individual, outlining the numbers of choices facing Grade 7′s and their parents particularly. There is little doubt that Wynberg Girls’ High has an enormous amount to offer any young girl facing high school. What was clear to parents and the girls attending the evening, was that those who are here and who have made that choice are passionate about their school, and have embraced several of the opportunities on offer.

Our Grade 9 Arts and Culture Students perform one of the dances they have learned

Our guests were then taken on a tour around our school with assigned “tour-guides” where the parents and grade 7 learners could ask questions, view facilities at our school and experience what it would be like to be a part of Wynberg family.

For those who were not able to attend this function, we will be hosting our next Information Evening on Tuesday the 28 February at 19h30.

Friday 17 February marked the day of one of Wynberg’s most intense matches against one of strongest rivals: Herschel. This is the first match that we would play on homeground as it were and we were not going done without a fight. The 2nd team were first to play and came out hard. They held them to a 2-3 goal difference the whole match but unfortunately lost 2 -5 in the last chukka.

The next game up was the 1st team and we were going out to defend Wynberg and try and keep our record here unbeaten. The first 2 chukkas we played as we never had before and held Herschel to a 3 – 3 match, but unfortunately after giving it our all, and fighting with everything we had, we lost 6 – 4.

Even though these teams lost, they were both great games and the water polo girls have made us extremely proud.

90% of the girls had not played the game before as our Grade 9′s (who are our experts) were on camp, but our novices thoroughly enjoyed the game and gained quite a bit of knowledge during the match.

The final score was 12 -9 to Wynberg Girls’ High! Way to go Wynberg!!

Wynberg Girls’ High School recently hosted two teachers from our Afritwin partner school in the UK – Devonport High School for Girls.

Mrs Debbie Gatting, an Art teacher and Mrs Jane Morton, a teacher with an interest in languages, spent a week at Wynberg Girls’. They observed lessons and spoke at assembly. In the process they learnt about the functioning of our school and shared with us a bit about their school and how Devonport High School for Girls is responding to the Olympic-themed curriculum projects Wynberg has already completed.

Trips around Cape Town and its surrounds also helped these visiting teachers to develop a greater understanding of and appreciation for Cape Town and African life and culture. From visiting Robben Island and the District Six Museum to petting cheetahs and meeting penguins at Boulders Beach, these educators were bowled over by our country’s natural beauty and were very complimentary about the behaviour, talents and welcoming spirit of our Wynberg girls.

The Wynberg Girls’ High Afritwin club worked hard to produce a booklet of South African slang. Copies of this booklet were presented to Mrs Morton and Mrs Gatting to take back and share with Devonport

This trip further cemented Wynberg’s working relationship with our UK partner and we look forward to more successful joint projects in the future.
