ACADEMIC

CURRENT AFFAIRS
Focusing on the good news this week (15 May), members of the Current Affairs Society discussed gay marriage rights, successes of the South African Film Industry and qualifying Olympic Hockey teams (men!) and looked at a website which focuses on South African successes.

RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IN WORLD KNOWLEDGE QUIZ
On Thursday afternoon the school had a record number of participants in the World Knowledge Quiz which was written from 13:30 to 15:00 on Thursday afternoon. This year, there were 362 participants. The aim of the Olympiad is to test the General Knowledge of all high school learners. There are bursaries available to top achievers in Grade 12 and there are cash prizes for those coming top in each grade. Wynberg we await your results!

THE ATHENA SOCIETY
The Athena society was fortunate to have two speakers for the afternoon: Khadija Brey, a matric student, on the subject of magic; and Elise Stumpel, on the differences between South African and Dutch schools. The presentations were highly entertaining and included magic tricks and miming lessons from Khadija; and revelations from Elise of how incredibly different the understanding of schooling is in other parts of the world. The talks offered the audience unique insight into two lesser known fields of interest, and provided an afternoon of some light-hearted fun.

DANCE STUDIES – CHOREOGRAPHY
For Danielle Wagner, Danielle Jones Michaela Staebler, Astrid Mehl and Kathryn Peart Tuesday was an extremely important day. Their ability as Choreographers was examined at 18h30 in the Aileen Currie Hall. Adjudicators for this exam were Anastasia Arendse, Nicola Schorn and Sylvia Stander. Their work was videoed by Tony Mittel.

SCIENCE MINQUIZ
The Annual Minquiz competition was held on Thursday 10 May at CPUT Bellville campus. On this occasion girls head some interesting talks by chemical engineers and those similar fields. Representing Wynberg were Khadija Brey; Nina Esterhuysen and Kim van Aswegen. Although, they did not make it through to the stage quiz final round, Khadija did come overall third in the excellence category, just missing a trip to the finals in Pretoria.

CULTURE

MAJOR PRODUCTION - How to succeed in business without really trying
SUNDAY REHEARSAL FOR PRINCIPAL CAST MEMBERS
There will be a rehearsal on Sunday for all leads from 9-5pm at Wynberg Boys’ High School Hall. All leads are encouraged to bring food and drink for themselves during the day. Cast members must ensure that they obtain the new rehearsal schedules.

ACCOMPANIST FOR VOCAL ENSEMBLE
There is an urgent call for any proficient pianist to offer his/her services as an accompanist to our Vocal Ensemble. The person would need to have his/her own transport.

WYNBERG EISTEDDFOD.
The Wynberg Eisteddfod was launched in the first week of this term. Some of the deadlines are fast appearing on the horizon.

LUNCHTIME CONCERT
The last lunchtime concert for the second term was held on Wednesday. The concert began with Kristen van Haarten on flute, followed by Ye-eun Jung (also on flute) Then there were two singers, Simone Daniels and Robyn Burrows. There were A LOT of people today, especially from Kirsten.

WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH CHOIR FESTIVAL
The annual Wynberg Boys’ High Choir Festival was held on Wednesday night in the City Hall. The acoustics in this beautiful building are outstanding and so the performances were particularly beautiful – exceptionally so when the accompaniment included the wonderful City Hall organ, the specifications of which were drawn up by Sir George Martin, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The mass choir events were conducted by Phillip Swales of the Cape Welsh Choir, and performances were given by a number of schools including both Wynberg Boys’ and Wynberg Girls’ High. We congratulate our girls – both members of our Choir and Vocal Ensemble on their outstanding performances.

MARIMBA FESTIVAL
On Friday night our Marimba Bands participated in the Marimba Festival held at the Baxter Theatre. As always it was a fabulous event and our performers held the Wynberg Banner extremely high. For photographs and video footage on this event please follow the link to our website.

DEBATING
Our debating team participated in the fourth round of the Rotary Inter-schools debating competition against Rondesbosch on Monday 14 May. The junior team proposed the motion that “parents should be punished for crimes perpetrated by their children.” The senior team also proposed the motion, theirs being: “this house would criminalise the refusal to provide reasonable assistance to people in distress.” Both teams debated really well but unfortunately lost to the boys!

WOOL FOR WONDERS CHALLENGE
Last year Wynberg Girls’ School Old Girls’ Union, in partnership with the Constantiaberg Bulletin, launched a “Wool for Wonders” jersey- knitting challenge. The aim of the challenge was to produce as many jerseys as possible for the babies at Nazareth House. It was a huge success (we FILLED the hall with jerseys 2500 of them) and this year we are going to be doing the same thing – but this year we will be knitting beanies and jerseys. The staff of Wynberg Girls’ High would like to challenge the groups – girls, parents and past pupils – to out- knit them in this challenge. (Number of items and proportional participation will be a determining factor!) Follow the link to our website for the pattern for both the beanie and the jersey.

“Wool for Wonders” Campaign 2012

Following the success of the 2011 campaign, Wynberg Girls’ School Old Girls’ Union, in partnership with the Constantiaberg Bulletin, is launching the “Wool for Wonders” jersey & beanie knitting challenge. The aim of the challenge is to produce as many jerseys & beanies as possible for the babies at Nazareth House. Winter is rapidly approaching and there are a large number of babies, particularly new-borns, who need protection against the weather. A small jersey and/or beanie, an easy knitting project, will enable them to be dressed warmly during these cold months.

The campaign is being launched at the school on Thursday, May 17th and will run until the end of July this year.

We appeal to past pupils, staff, parents and learners as well as the community to participate in the challenge and follow the jersey pattern printed on this page. Jerseys can be delivered to Wynberg Girls’ High School reception.

If you cannot knit something yourself, you can still participate in this community project by donating balls of double knitting wool. We have many senior citizens who would love to assist but no longer can afford the wool required.

For further information contact Hilary Mills on 021 764 2200 or marketing@wynghs.co.za

After many weeks of rehearsing and tweaking, it was finally time for us to show what we were made of.

The evening was filled with magic, as we all entered the Cape Town City Hall, hair slicked back, teeth pearly white and uniforms neatly pressed. Seeing many familiar faces as we greeted our fellow mass choir participants eased the nerves only slightly. There was no doubt in our minds: this was a big deal.

We took our seats in the gallery and cheered and clapped for the other schools as they performed, growing more aware of our own moment in the spotlight.

Bebitty-bobbity-bebitty-bobbity-bebitty… To warm up our voices, Vocal gymnastics were the order of the day in the beautiful resonant Edwardian chambers. There were a few last minute prayers. Then it was our turn.

(Remember to breathe. Remember to stand correctly. Remember to smile.)

The audience erupted! To a thunderous applause we took our bow! We did it!

There were seven other participating school choirs and two all male adult choirs. As always, the evening ended with a mass choir item. This year it was The Battle Hymn of the Republic. There really is very little that is as beautiful as a mass choir, in an extraordinary concert hall accompanied by a brilliant pianist and an equally exceptional organist. The only response could be a standing ovation.

Wow, what a night. Now to calm down and try to sleep.

We bring you a video clip from the evening.

So what is a red velvet cake? And what is the difference between icing and frosting?

These are just two of the questions that were answered in the Grade 10 Consumer Studies class.

And here are the answers!

A red velvet cake is a popular cake with a dark red, bright red or red-brown color. It is usually prepared as a layer cake topped with a creamy vanilla icing, cookie dough, or most popularly, cream cheese icing. The reddish-brown color of the cake was originally from a reaction of the cocoa powder with an acidic ingredient such as buttermilk; however, red food coloring is often added. Common ingredients include buttermilk, butter, flour, cocoa, cookie dough if using that filling, and beetroot or red food coloring. The amount of cocoa used varies in different recipes. Cream cheese frosting is most commonly paired with the cake, as well as the traditional buttercream.

Butter cream is icing sugar and butter blended together by creaming the butter first then gradually adding the sifted icing sugar.
Frosting is just icing sugar mixed with a little liquid such as water, orange juice etc., to form a thick icing, which when used on a cake sets with a thin shiny crust but is still soft inside.

But Consumers isn’t just about theory – the fun part is the practical side.

Of course, we must make and taste!

Not only did the Grade 10’s learn about cakes and icing, they also learnt about making decorations. Flowers and leaves were the order of the day… along with glitter, dust and sparkles. The only thing limiting the Grade 10’s were their imaginations.

After making red velvet cupcakes, the girls were given the opportunity to pipe the icing onto the cake and then to adorn the cake with all the accessories – which they loved.

The girls left the class inspired and ready to open their own home industry store!

All the Wynberg Netball Teams played Reddam at Reddam on Tuesday.

Summary

U19 A Reddam 26 -25
U19B Reddam 11-10
U16A Wynberg 15-14
U16B Reddam 17-9
U16C Wynberg 11 – 4
U14A Wynberg 10-5
U14B Reddam 14-4
U14C Wynberg 12-5

U19A

Wynberg 1st Team played against Reddam, at Reddam’s home grounds in Tokai.

In the first quarter Wynberg were down 9-6, and quite shocked at this score. After the 2nd quarter Wynberg managed to pull back a few goals and go into the half time break 16-12 ahead. Wynberg finally had their heads in the game and were determined to win. By the 3rd quarter they were still in the lead, however, in the last quarter Wynberg lost it handing Reddam a win by the closest of margins.

Zee said, ”You win some and you lose some. ” Despite the loss, the 1st team walked away with their heads high but disappointed at the loss as they had certainly given their all. The final score was 26-25. In the game one of Wynberg’s star players, Anna Jacobs, injured her ankle. Mercifully, it doesn’t appear to be too serious an injury. We wish her a fast recovery.

U19B

The 2nd team also played against Reddam at their home grounds. The team were eager to play and eager to win after two narrow defeats in their previous matches. The game started off a bit slow, with Reddam scoring more goals than Wynberg, but Wynberg came back nicely ending off the first half scoring a few goals. In the 2nd half Wynberg almost had it but they lost the match by 1 goal, again. Leaving the final score 11-10.

The team was extremely frustrated because they were so determined to walk away with a win. The coach mentioned that they must not give up and they must keep fighting. The girls are determined for a win in their next fixture against St Cyprians.

U16A

The u16A Team took a while to settle into the fast-paced match against Reddam. They did however go into the half time break 10-7 up. The second half was more closely matched and Reddam managed to score 7 goals against Wynberg’s 5 goals. Sasha and Sarah had 17 attempts on goal and managed to convert an excellent 15 times. In an extremely tense last few minutes, Wynberg held out to win the match 15-14.

U16B

The u16B’s started off their game very confidently even though they were 6-5 down at half time. Umpiring interpretations had the girls a little confused at times. Both Alex and Kirsty had 18 attempts on goal but only managed to convert 9 of these. The u16B’s lost 17-9 but are positive in the fact they know where they went wrong and will learn from these mistakes.

U16C

After the first half Wynberg were 4-3 ahead, although they could have been 8-3 up with missed opportunities on goal. Katso and Hlumelo were the goal scorers for this match. In the second half, Wynberg ran away with the match, finishing the game 11-4 ahead.

The Player of the Match was Siphe Kedame..

U14A

Reddam dominated the match from the start, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes thanks to their very vocal supporters, however this did not deter the Wynberg team who preserved and came back to a half time score of Wynberg 4, Reddam 2. Leigh Herman and Skye Simpson were the Wynberg goal scorers who managed to score another 6 goals for Wynberg in the second half. The coach, Ms Williams, was very pleased with how the girls are staring to communicate with each other and play together as a team.

The Player of the Match was Leigh Herman.

U14B

The Wynberg started off well, but unfortunately the Reddam side managed to intercept a number of passes and had a solid defence which made it very difficult for the Wynberg attack to get possession of the ball. At half time the Reddam team lead 8-3. Wynberg only managed to score 1 more goal in the second half while Reddam further extended their lead. The final score was 14-4 to Reddam.

The Wynberg player of the match was Vuya Puzi for her exceptional defensive play under difficult circumstances.

U14C

Whylde Kings had an exceptional match against Reddam, ensuring her team finished the game victorious. She converted every opportunity she had at goal, giving Wynberg a half time lead of 5-1. With the assistance of Nicole Chineka they converted this half time score to a final score of 12-5 to Wynberg, to seal another victory for the u14C Team.

The 1st badminton team played their opening match of the season against South Peninsula at the Western Province courts in Access Park.

First to take to the court was captain Hayley Smith at number 1 singles. She very quickly asserted her dominance and raced to a 11-2 lead before they switched sides. Hayley continued leading by example, winning her match 21-6. Gabby Schiava followed at 2nd singles and she was also far too strong for her South Peninsula opposition, winning 21-0.

For the Marshall twins this was their 1st match representing Wynberg. Kaylee played 3rd singles while Catelin played the 4th singles. Both of them were successful in their singles matches winning 21-9 and 21-7 respectively.

In the doubles events, Hayley partnered Gabby and Kaylee and Catelin played the 2nd doubles. Each pairing played two matches and won both. The highlight of the afternoon was when Kaylee managed to serve 21 times to win their doubles match 21-0.

A successful start to the season for the Wynberg Badminton Team

All the games were extremely close, but unfortunately Wynberg walked away losing by a single point.

Fairburn had accumulated 144 points while Wynberg had 143.

Zeleah de Sousa played first, in one of the closest matches of this season. With the games tied at 2-2 it came down to the final set. Zeleah went down quickly trailing 6-2 before she made the comeback of the season, going on to win her match and put Wynberg on the score board.

Carly Katzef was next up. She too lost the first two games in her tie, but managed to easily pull back the third game. Unfortunately she could not finish the match ad lost 3-1.

Demi Steenkamp played a brilliant game, in which both players were absolutely exhausted at the end of the match. She also unfortunately lost 3-1, however each of those 4 games were incredibly closely contested, with one of the third game going to 15-13!

And finally, Lizl Everts continued her winning ways, defeating Fairburn’s number 1 in three straight sets.

Grade 8′s were tasked with making a bridge for Technology this term. Thirty centimeters long, thirteen centimeters tall and eleven centimeters wide … it sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? Well, here’s the catch: the bridge has to be made using only drinking straws and pins and it has to be able to withstand the weight of a full Coca-Cola can.

Nevertheless, my amazing Grade Eights have enthusiastically embraced the challenge of this project (not that we had a choice!). For the past few lessons, Technology has been hilarious with everyone pinning two straws together in an attempt to get the strongest, sturdiest bridge.

Good Luck to all the Grade 8′s, may the strongest bridge win!
