? In the Concert Hall of the Baxter at UCT Big Band Jazz Festival

On Friday 2 June, the Jazz Band performed at the Baxter Theatre along with The Little Giants, Heathfield High School Jazz Band, Beau Soleil Music Centre, Bergvliet High School Big Band and the UCT Big Band. The event itself is the nineteenth of its kind, and this year brought together 23 school, university and community big bands in a four day festival. Funds raised from the Festival are used to support music initiatives in the disadvantaged communities.

During the course of the year, the Festival has assisted with the sponsorship of a number of instruments, music books as well as making a donation to various music groups to assist with travel expenses to attend workshops as well as the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown.

Conducted and trained by Dayna Pearce, our Jazz Band performed four items: Rumba Latina, Why don’t you do Right, Out of the Dughouse and Chega De Saude to a very appreciative audience. There is something fabulous about performing at a prestigious event like this – especially when the audience is a sophisticated and knowledgable one, and there is little doubt that this has been one of the highlights on the Jazz Band’s calendar.
