The WGHS 1st hockey team played one of their most anticipated league games of the season against Springfield on Wednesday 2 August. Despite the wet conditions, there was wonderful Wynberg spirit and the supporters shouted encouragement the whole match long. The game was fast paced and very competitive. After some advice at the end of the first quarter, Wynberg maintained their high level of play during the second quarter. Both teams had short corner opportunities, but neither were able to score and so the half time score was 0-0.

The girls began the third quarter with even greater determination and were determined to take the lead. Despite a few scoring opportunities, Wynberg was  unable to convert. The third quarter ended with Springfield scoring off a short corner, making the score 1-0. Our team persevered, continuing to push in the last quarter. Wynberg was definitely more attacking and this resulted in more short corner opportunities. However, despite their best efforts, Wynberg couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. The girls gave everything they had but unfortunately, the match ended 1-0 to Springfield.

The 1st team really must be commended on their support for each other and their unrelenting fighting spirit. The support from the sidelines was unbelievable and undoubtedly contributed to the overall positive attitude. A big thank you must therefore go to the supporters and the coaches who braved the weather to show their Wynberg pride. Well done to the 1st team who truly fought tooth and nail and never stopped trying.
