On 26 July 2017, the WGHS 1st hockey team played a match against George Heriot’s School, a touring team from Edinburgh, Scotland. Many of the 1st team players were hosting members of the touring team and so there was much anticipation and excitement. The first half of the match saw Wynberg attacking confidently. However, despite various scoring opportunities, the half time score was 0-0.
WGHS started the second half with greater determination and soon found themselves 2-0 up. Jenna Grey and Kayla Morgan both scored well-worked goals, giving Wynberg the lead. However, the George Heriot girls put a up a strong fight and with some skilful play managed to score a goal, making the score 2-1. The final minutes of play involved Wynberg defending two short corners obtained by the opposition. The WGHS defence fought hard and so the match concluded with a 2-1 win for Wynberg.
The girls then had some traditional “boerie rolls” with the opposition and it was fun, relaxing time spent chatting with the touring side. The evening was most enjoyable and it was great way for the 1st team to get back into the hockey schedule.
