The Metro South Education District held their 2013 Matric Awards ceremony on Wednesday 5 February 2014.  Wynberg Girls’ High School shone as a leading school in this district with 61 high schools, and had the greatest number of learners invited to attend this prestigious event.

Wynberg Girls’ High School was recognised with the following awards:

  • The school in Circuit 2 with the highest percentage of learners achieving a Bachelors’ pass,
  • Joint First in Circuit 2
  • One of six schools in the district with a 100% pass rate

Lauren Gildenhuys, our 2013 Head of School, was chosen to speak on behalf of the Class of 2013 and she spoke eloquently to her peers, Principals and District Officials of the key realisations she had reflected on since leaving school at the end of last year.  She spoke of the privilege of attending an extraordinary school and challenged her fellow matriculants to “Pay it Forward” by helping someone, sometime to achieve their goals as they had been helped to do.  She spoke of always being grateful to the people who support one along one’s path in life – parents, teachers, principals, fellow learners and district officials. She also spoke of the pressure the academically talented learners felt to follow certain career paths and encouraged her peers to take a career path which excited them and to take risks responsibly to, ultimately, become better contributors to society and South Africa.

Awards were then presented to individual learners for their outstanding achievements in the 2013 National Senior Certificate examinations and Wynberg Girls’ High School dominated the stage with the following awards:

  • Each school’s top learner was recognised and Lauren Gildenhuys was presented with this certificate.
