Hockey stickWynberg performed exceptionally the PGSGU Interschools Hockey Tournament held at Wynberg on 9 and 10 September 2016. Every team achieved remarkable results and are to be congratulated for their efforts.

WGHS 1st team :

Our first team demonstrated a very high level of hockey to place 2nd overall, Wynberg’s best result in the U19 category in 3 years. The team started off day 2 of the tournament at 08:00 on Saturday. Wynberg defended consistently and after one or two missed opportunities, held Rustenburg to a 0-0 draw. The team’s next match was against Springfield, which resulted in a draw. Coming back from 1-0 down, Katherine Nicholls scored a deflection goal to make the final score 1-1. Wynberg then arguably played  their toughest opposition, Herschel. Once again, Wynberg came back from 1-0 down at half time with a goal from Kayla Morgan to finish the match with a 1-1 draw. Wynberg’s last match was against St. Cyprian’s. The team took an early lead but finished the first half off with a score of 1-1. However, Wynberg used their opportunites in the second half to win their last match of Interschools 4-1.  Congratulations to Aaliah Dollie, Katherine Nicholls and Raniya Khan for scoring Wynberg’s goals. The team finished with a total of 6 points, two points behind the winners, Herschel. Special mention must go to Wynberg’s matrics: Sasha Sivertsen, Jaime Southgate and captain Chelsea Manoek for their performance and contribution to WGHS’s first team. A big thank you must go to Ms Hudson-Windsor, Ryan Pillay and Ms Van Wyk for managing and coaching the team to their 2nd place finishing. It was a truly memorable experience and  the result of wonderful team bonding, Wynberg’s U19 team had a thoroughly enjoyable morning of hockey.

U16 team:

On 9 & 10 September the Wynberg’s U16A hockey team played at the Interschools’ Hockey Tournament. This is the biggest date in the hockey calendar and required lots of hard training. Friday the 9th was the first day for Wynberg’s U16s. The team’s first match was against Herschel which proved rather tough. Wynberg fought hard but unfortunately, Herschel managed to score two goals near the end, resulting in a 2-0 loss for Wynberg. The team’s second match was against Springfield. Wynberg played exceptionally well and with 4 minutes left, managed to score. The final score was 1-0 to Wynberg and the goal scorer was Michelle Boshoff.

Saturday 10 September was the team’s second day of the tournament. The first match of the day was against San Souci. It was a great start to the day for Wynberg, finishing with a 4-1 win. Goal scorers were Olivia Walker (2), Hajira Lockhat (1) and Megan De Beer (1). The second match of the day was against St Cyprians. This was the team’s best match of the entire season. The girls all showed courage and managed to put one past their opposition’s keeper. The goal scorer was was Olivia Walker and the player of the match was Aliya Lewis. The team’s last match of the day was against Rustenburg. Despite their best efforts, Wynberg’s U16’s couldn’t prevent Rustenburg from scoring. The final score was 2-0 to Rustenburg. Overall, Wynberg’s U16s placed 3rd. The girls were very proud of this achievement. This marked the close of a truly unforgettable season with amazing players who all improved drastically. Thanks to Ms Powell & Colleen Reed for managing and coaching the team.
