Gcotyelwa Mashiqa, Curator of Photography at Zeitz MOCAA, opens the 2017 Matric Art Exhibition

On Wednesday evening, we celebrated the amazing artwork produced by the Matric art girls. Special guests, learners and teachers admired their broad creativity and hard work that they have been producing for the past few years – a huge congratulations to all the talented artists who exhibited their works, and expressed an enormous amount of relief that the stress of art practicals is over!

Our guest speaker this year was Gcotyelwa Mashiqa, the AKO Foundation assistant Curator of Photography at Zeitz MOCAA. She talked of the importance of role models as young artists find their feet and more specifically female role models. Commenting that when she was at the start of her career as a curator, there were not the extraordinary opportunities that our young artists have, she encouraged them to use their talents to prepare the way in the art world for future generations. Lively music, cocktail foods and moments of immense pride created the wonderful ambiance of an event to remember. The exhibition is open until 13:00 on 20 October.
