On Friday 13 March, Wynberg Girls’High School took part in the CANSA Relay for Life. We had a total of 200 girls take part in the event this year. CANSA Relay for Life teams took turns to walk around a track for 12 hours to represent that cancer never sleeps. The event was a chance for teams to support CANSA and to raise funds for cancer research in South Africa.

The event opened with the singing of the National Anthem and the reading of the CANSA Relay for Life mission statement. We were honoured those who have survived as we formed a guard of honour as they walked around the track.

Each team focused on a different type of cancer and our teams were able to learn more about the different types of cancer and how they can get involved in the fight against cancer in South Africa.

When the sun went down, the stadium lights were turned off and we had a chance to remember those who have passed away during the Luminaria Ceremony by lighting candles inside luminaria bags which encircle the track. These luminaria bags are dedicated to those who have been affected by cancer.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the planning of the relay and all those who took part for their support.
