love_origOver the past two weeks, since the devastating fire that took place in Imizamo Yethu, it has been amazing to see how the residents of both Hout Bay and Cape Town have opened their hearts and banded together to provide not only emergency relief, but emotional support to the thousands of families affected by the fire.

Schools, organizations and local families have all made a concerted effort to collect food, clothes, toiletries and much more to contribute to the relief efforts in Hout Bay. Thula Thula, Gift of the Givers, Red Cross and many others have provided tents, mattresses, blankets, food and bedding to those left homeless after the fire. Community halls have also been opened up to many of the families that were left destitute. The Hout Bay community has also ensured that the many families’ pets have been taken good care of under the protection of DARG. Various individuals and organisations have taken it upon themselves to set up donation websites which they have shared across various social media platforms in effort to raise money towards the rebuilding of the lives of those left with nothing in Imizamo Yethu. Thousands of Rands have already been raised towards the cause.

Several donation locations were set up around Hout Bay, which over the past 2 weeks have had an overwhelming number of volunteers helping to sort out all of the donated items. Despite the intense heat over the past few days in Cape Town, residents from all over joined together in Hout Bay to hand over all of the donations to the Imizamo Residents. Dehydration and sunburn did not discourage the volunteers, but only made them work harder to give back to their fellow Capetonians and help them to get back onto their feet once more.

It is incredibly heart-warming to see just how much our local communities can achieve if we all work together. Cape Town is certainly filled with some amazing people!
