Chess (5)The Wynberg Girls’ High School Chess Team took part in a chess tournament at Wynberg Boys on Friday the 16 October.

Wynberg Girls’ entered three teams of two into the Blitz Doubles tournament, which involved pairs of players helping each other against a pair of opponents while under a time constraint, forcing the team to play strategically and quickly. Several schools competed in the tournament including Pinelands, Norman Henshilwood, SACS, Sans Souci, South Peninsula, Camps Bay, Herzlia and Wynberg Boys’ High School.

The Swiss rules were new to most of our girls, and so we were on a steep learning curve. Despite this, our girls did well, winning some games and playing with great sportsmanship.

The tournament taught the girls to work as a team and to support one another. Overall, the tournament was an exciting new experience for many of the girls and motivated them to improve their chess skills.
