Equal Education – 2010

High praise for the girls who have been involved in peer tutoring a number of students from Khayelitsha.

Tribute to Wynberg girls by Equal Education

At the beginning of the year Rehana Odendaal initiated an amazing project that involves getting to know and tutoring learners from schools in Khayelitsha.  The last session for the year and for this group of learners was today, Tuesday 19 October 2010.

It has been a wonderful experience to be part of such a great initiative. We work together with a larger organization ‘Equal Education’ and it feels good to be part of such a big programme designed to better the future. It’s become clear that all of the girls involved in the programme feel that the learners at ‘Equal’ are not only being tutored by us, but we are learning from them. Every week we leave having learnt about something about each others’ homes, schools and lives and best of all – a new Xhosa word!

Meghan Daniels and I have taken over from Rehana and hope to continue this amazing venture that has been started at Wynberg. We are both extremely enthusiastic and so are the other Wynberg Girls’ that have joined us every Tuesday.

It has been a great success and we were very sad to say goodbye to the first group of learners, though we look forward to next year and the new friends and faces we will get to know.
