Eskom Science Expo

We arrived at the Goodhope Centre on Tuesday afternoon 20th August to set up for the annual regional Eskom Science expo for young scientists. There was a buzz of excitement going around as children from as young as 11 years old were busy setting up their various projects.

Wednesday 21st of August was the opening ceremony for the Science Expo and we had various guest speakers come to speak to us. Then it was time for judging. The judges include a number of teachers from the schools participating in Eskom Cape Town Expo for Young Scientists. It is divided into a Junior and a Senior section (Grades 10-12).

The speakers included a representative from Eskom and a learner who attended the International Science Fair in Taipei as well as Phillipe Lothaller  who went to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona. These were both learners who won gold medals at last year’s Cape Town Expo and then went to the National Expo in Johannesburg and were selected to represent SA at these Expos.

At the prize giving four of the entries were awarded bronze medals. These are our Bronze medallists:

Amira Ramklass &   Kristen van Harten: 
Category:  Senior Innovation and Technology including Recycling and Recycled materials.
Project title:  The Hovercraft which they made. It is a fully working hovercraft.

Natalie Winter:      
Category:   Senior Earth Sciences – Geography and Geology including Oceanography.
Project title:  Magnetoreception

Melissa Guthrie:      
Category: Senior Plant Sciences including Marine Plants and Plant Ecology
Project title: The effects of earthworms on plant growth
