Service/Cultural Concert for the Elderly

The first project of the Service and Cultural Pillars for 2010 came together on Tuesday 3 November with a little help from our brother school as we hosted a concert and tea for senior citizens from the surrounding suburbs.

Wynberg Girls’ High School was a place of great excitment and enthusiastic preparations as the final touches were added to the hall for our annual concert and tea forthe elderly on 3 November.

This project is an initiative of both the Service and Cultural pillars, where the heads of the two pillars work together with our counterparts at Wynberg Boys’ High School to provide an afternoon of tea and entertainment for senior citizens from the old age homes within our community.

This year we hosted forty-five guests, ladies and gentlemen, from Murambi House, Avondrust and Brenthurst and treated them to acts by fourteen of Wynberg’s top performers. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone involved and it reminded us of the importance of taking time out of our often busy schedules to spend time with those who most appreciate it. Sometimes all it takes to make a significant difference in someone else’s life is to show a genuine interest.  That is what service is about, and it is an interest which was in great abundance on the occasion.

The smiles and heartfelt thanks which we received at the close of our programme is enough to assure us that our guests left with a lot more than just bath smellies and full tummies, and I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the afternoon as successful as it was.
