The Dance Star Global Dance Competition in Porec offered that opportunity to us. Although much was strange – from the driving on the “wrong” side of the road to the late late sunsets and midnight shopping – it was beautiful. And exciting.

Each morning we had a fitness session with our dance teacher. We also had many practice sessions until late in the evening, because we wanted not only to do our best at the competition, but to achieve. There were many workshops offered to all dancers and teachers. The opening night was on the 24 May, where it was mainstreamed live. Each country went up alphabetically on the stage – ZA? As they say, one saves the best for last!

All qualifiers happened during the week and the finals were scheduled for Saturday. All competitors were nervous. Sometimes that nervousness can give one the edge, and in this instance our small group danced with heart and soul. Next were the formation and our modern pieces. We danced against more than 20 other countries. it was a very tough section.

It was at the prize giving on Sunday that we would learn how we would be placed. It is difficult to find words to describe the elation felts when we heard that South Africa was second in the World dance trial. Would we do it again? In a heartbeat!
