After an exciting pool party, three orientation days and one day of normal lessons; the Grade Eights of 2012 were officially welcomed as part of the Wynberg family.

The Pledge ceremony was simple yet significant. Parents of the Grade Eights, staff, the Grade Twelves and the focus of the event, our Grade Eights are invited. All were welcomed by Rayne Callaghan, Head of the School and then addressed briefly by Thabile Myeza, chair of the Representative Council of Learners. Thabile spoke of the transformative experiences the Grade Eights would undergo in five brief years and then the Grade Eights were centre-stage. Although it takes time for each Grade Eight to be invited onto the stage, to be officially welcomed by the Head of House, her Matric Leader and her class tutor and to receive her pledge, for those young women walking across the stage a multitude of feelings, thoughts, hopes and perhaps uncertainties are evident in their faces and their eyes. Mostly, there are smiles.

The Grade Eights are asked to reflect on what they are committing themselves to in making Wynberg Girls’ High their school of choice: it is a commitment to excellence, to embracing opportunities and to demonstrating respect. They are asked to sign that pledge which at this point only has their principal’s signature, but which has a space for theirs.

Mrs Harding’s reminded the Grade Eights that they have been chosen. They, of the six hundred applicants vying for their position, had been selected as Wynberg girls.

We hope that every Grade 8, supported by her Tutor Group and House and challenged by the opportunities afforded at the school in each of the four pillars, finds her niche in the school. May Wynberg become the territory of personal growth, high achievement and excellence.
