On Saturday the 14th of March Wynberg Girls’ High School hosted the Spar first teams Hockey Knockout Tournament. The morning started off early with great excitement and productive preparation, from setting up banners and gazebos, to ensuring goodie bags were packed, to making the final tuckshop preparations. There was much to be done and throughout the day the Wynberg Girls’ first hockey team helped pack muffins and water for each team, ensuring that everybody got their deserving portion. The girls were truly great ambassadors for our school and great praise was received from our guests who attended.
Our first hockey team played their match against De Kuilen high school. They dominated the game from start to finish and won 6-0. In the first half of the match Steph Lopes-Stuart scored two goals and Katherine Nicholls scored one goal. This gave Wynberg a beneficial start in the game. The second half was no different. Our Girls came out to finish off the game by scoring another three goals. Tasneem Rawoot scored two goals and Jenna Grey went on to score another goal. An overall excellent team performance. Each player in the team contributed positively to the successful win.
After each match played on the day a player of the match was nominated from each team. From our side the well deserved title of player of the match went to Sasha Sivertsen who played brilliantly!
Due to the wonderful effort and performance by our first team, the team is through to play in the next round of this tournament. The next match that they will be playing is scheduled for the 1st May at Rhenish where they will be playing against DF Malan. The team is excited for their next match and hope to play more brilliant hockey, resulting in a win against DF Malan.
