Sunday, 6 August saw the Finals of the Spar Hockey Tournament taking place in Hermanus. Our Wynberg 1st Hockey Team won their pool in the South Zone qualification round that took place in May and secured a place in Sunday’s finals, along with Rustenburg, as well as 2 teams from Stellenbosch and 2 teams from Paarl/Worcester. Teams from all across Cape Town made their way to Hermanus to compete in the finals on the new astroturf at Hermanus High School.

Matches were 20 minutes one way and so the teams had to really get involved from the very beginning. WGHS’s first opponents were Parel Vallei. The opposition took the lead 2-0 quite early in the match but Wynberg fought back and eventually managed to convert one of their many scoring opportunities. The final result was 2-1 to Parel Vallei (they finished 3rd overall). Wynberg then played Paarl Gim at 09:40 and the girls truly raised their level of play and coped extremely well under pressure. Wynberg scored a goal midway through the match and maintained their lead to secure a 1-0 victory over the eventual finalists.

WGHS’S next pool match was against Fairmont High School. Despite playing very attacking hockey, the final result was 1-1. This meant that Wynberg ended 3rd in their pool and would play against Stellenberg in the playoffs. Unfortunately, this also resulted in a 0-0 draw with Stellenberg eventually winning on penalty shoot outs. The girls were so disappointed as this resulted in Wynberg having to play for 7th and 8th position. However, everyone was very supportive and encouraging and Wynberg approacheed their final match of the day with great determination. The girls found themselves again facing Fairmont, although this time, Wynberg took their revenge and won 2-1. Great positional play and a fighting spirit enabled Wynberg to secure a victory.

Ultimately, it was long day’s hockey filled with lots of running, great goals and wonderful team spirit. A very high standard of hockey was exhibited and it was very inspiring to see so many girls playing the sport they love and enjoy. A special congratulations to a deserving Kayla Morgan, who was selected as the Wynberg Player of the Tournament by the organisers. Each team had a player of the tournament and we are really proud that the organisers picked Kayla!

The WGHS 1st team and all our players have grown so much after this tournament and are sure to have a successful remainder of the season. Well done to all the girls! We are extremely proud of you!
