On Saturday the 13th of June, Wynberg played hockey against Tygerberg, Rustenburg, Settlers and Westerford. The matches were filled with excitement and action. The weather was wonderful, displaying beautiful Cape Town weather, which accompanied some great matches and incredible wins for Wynberg.

1st Team

The first team kicked their game off at 10am in what was a very tense match. In the first ten minutes of the first half Wynberg was playing some good hockey and linked up some great balls. However, in the latter part of the half they struggled to stick to their game plan and keep their spirits high. This unfortunately resulted in a break-through goal for Tygerberg. There were many frustrating moments for the team in this half especially and at the end of the first half, the score remained 1-0 to Tygerberg.

After half time the team seemed to pick up their drive and energy levels. In this half they managed to score two goals and won the match 2-1. This win has been brewing for a long time coming and was their first win this season. The first goal was scored by Amina Williams who fought hard for the ball to get into the goals. The second goal was scored by Sasha Sivertsen from a short corner opportunity. This goal was scored in the last minute of the game, which made it very intense and suspense-filled. The short corner was awarded, the shooting option was chosen and the next moment the ball was flung into the back of the net by an incredible drag flick from Sasha. They team were thrilled and very pleased to end the fixtures for this term off with a win.

Under 16A

On Saturday 13 June the u16a team played against Tygerberg and won 3 – 0. The team had a very slow start although having majority of the possession, many short corners and a couple of very close chances in the first half, which ended in 0 – 0. Midway through the 2nd half we finally managed to put the ball into the box through Aaliah Dollie. Once the first goal came we settled a little more which allowed us to score the second, scored by Caitlin Thomson and our last one finally coming off our first successful short corner shot by Saarah Smith. Well done to the team for picking up their first win and to Aaliah Dollie for being selected as player of the match.

Under 16E Team

Score: 0/0

The girls did not communicate well in the first half and missed many opportunities because of this. This improved with the second half and the team’s defense was notably good throughout. The girls played a good game overall and were equally matched by their opponents.  Player of the match: Aniqah Brenner

Under 14A

The U14A hockey Team beat Tygerberg 7-0 on Saturday 12 June. The team played some good structural hockey creating many scoring opportunities. Tatum Knipe eventually scored a good rebound goal to put the score at 1-0 at the end of the first half. The half time talk by Ms Hudson Windsor obviously inspired the team as they went on to score another six goals. Good passing and good defence by the strikers and links kept the ball in our attacking zone.  Jess Austin was player of the match for her defensive work up front. A well deserved win for the team.
