1st vs El Shaddai

Mixed emotions were the order of the day ahead of the last league fixture of the season. Wynberg’s 1st Team was determined to make this one count, not just on the day, but as part of the preparations ahead of Interschools next Saturday. The team went in with a very specific game plan and instructions to play wide and close down El Shaddai’s key player. Wynberg’s first penalty corner comes just 5 minutes into the game, but unfortunately the ball goes wide. Another scoring opportunity comes Wynberg’s way again just a few minutes later when Steph lays off a great ball to Jamie, who gets the deflection off the keepers pads to slot in the first goal. With 4 minutes to go in the first half El Shaddai are awarded a penalty corner but no goal is scored. Wynberg is determined to fix their mistake and go on the attack again, this time with the finish and goal by Nicole. El Shaddai, however, are not to be underestimated and with a lapse in judgement and poor marking, Taryn Glasby scores for El Shaddai just a minute before half time. The 2nd half was dominated by Wynberg , who completely outplayed and outwitted El Shaddai’s defence. Steph managed a beautiful backstick in the circle which was deflected into the goals by one of El Shaddai’s own players. Another scoring opportunity comes around, this time with a textbook deflection from Nicole off a short corner with 8 min to go. With some beautiful build-up play from the back, this time the goal comes from Cara. Moments later a hat-trick spell for Nicole when Sharna lays off a precision pass to her and slots in another beautiful deflection.

Final score 6-1 to Wynberg!

2nds vs Elkanah 1st Team (lost 1-4)

3rds vs Elkanah 2nds (lost 0-2)

On Saturday Wynberg’s third team played Elkanah House. We were down a few players, but we more than enough spirit. The first half was intense. Our teams were evenly matched and the ball wa run up and down the field. Elkanah had a few shots at goal, but they were saved by our defense and goalie. Wynberg managed to get it up to their D, but unfortunately did not have any shots at goal. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

The second half saw a quick goal by Elkanah House, which seemed to dampen Wynberg’s spirit. Another goal followed shortly after making the score 2-0 to Elkanah. However, Wynberg came back fighting and the last 10 minutes saw extreme spirit from Wynberg. We had a couple of shots at goals. The final score was 2-0 to Elkanah which did not seem to reflect Wynberg’s spirit, but a wonderful game was had by all. The woman of our match was Rhiannon Murray as she was the top goal scorer of the season. The matrics and I would like to thank our amazing team and coach, Mr. Machado, for a wonderful season.

 U16A vs Reddam 1st (drew 0-0)

U16B (Game cancelled by Rhodes)

U16C (game abandoned as Pinelands only arrived with 3 players)

U16D vs Bernadino Heights (won 2-0)

U14A (game cancelled by Melkbos)

 U14B vs Pinelands (won 7-0)

The Wynberg team were very excited to play their last game of the season and started really well against a determined Pinelands team, who unfortunately did not have a goal keeper in their defensive unit. Although this seemed to be an unfair advantage to the visiting side, they put up a good fight and managed to keep Wynberg’s early chances at bay. Jenna Featherstone was the first to break the dead lock scoring one of her hat trick goals but sweeping it into the corner from a cross into the circle. Pinelands defended with majority of their team behind the ball, making it difficult to string passes together. Wynberg persevered and managed to score another 3 goals making the half time score 4-0. The Wynberg defenders unfortunately didn’t get to touch the ball much but aided the links and strikers in the second half in getting the ball wide and creating more space for the team to add an additional 3 goals to their 4-0 half time tally. Wynberg missed out on converting their numerous short corner opportunities through brilliant Pinelands defense.

Goal scorers: Jenna Featherstone x 3, Emily Jenkins, Sarah Ackland, Megan Gierdien

Comment from the coach: “Very proud of the way the girls enjoyed their last match of the season. They showed great team spirit and played together making the most of it. It was a pleasure to see how much they had improved from their first game of the season. ”
