On Saturday the 26th July 2015 Wynberg played hockey vs St. Cyprians. The playing conditions were great as the weather cleared up and the players faced their matches with enthusiasm and excitement. This week’s matches marked the beginning of the second half of the season and showcased the great hockey that Wynberg Girls play.

1st Team vs St Cyprians

The first team kicked their match off at 10:00 determined to get a win. They played wonderful hockey and showed everyone that when you work together as a team, you can get the desired results. St. Cyprians put up a good fight; however, our girls gave the game the extra edge that is needed from a winning team. They won their match 1-0, with the goal being scored in the second half by Amina Williams, from a great build up from the team. The team was hungry for the ball, linked up great passes and gave it their best shot which truly paid off.

The team must be commended on their great effort and start to the season. They are now three points up on the log as a result of this win and they will continue to work hard and to push for more wins in their upcoming fixtures.

1st Team vs St Cyprians

 3rd Team vs St Cyprians

Score was 1-1

Cyprians started with the ball and scored the first goal in the first half. Wynberg came back after some fantastic skill work by the whole team but special mention to Aaliya Adams for her part in scoring the equaliser. Credit must be given for the amazing defending done by our goalkeeper, Robyn Roberts and the solid game played by our Player of the Match and captain, Anne Hall. This resulted in an equally matched game and pleasant outcome, however fitness will need to be improved and shots on goal needs to be practiced.

U16A vs St Cyprians

The U16A team played against St Cyprians this weekend. Once again we started slowly and struggled to get on the scoreboard, while soaking up plenty of pressure from the St Cyps attack. Well done to goal keeper Sisi Dingeni for keeping some good early shots out. The first goal eventually came through Rebecca Franklin, which took some pressure off us and allowed us to continue to build up and attack with a little less pressure. The second goal came from a short corner, through Caitlin Thomson, who was well positioned on the near post for a deflection from solid shot from top D from Saarah Smith. The girls played well and were very pleased with the result.

U16B vs Elkanah House

The u16B’s had an early start on Saturday for their match against Elkanah House. The game was off to an eventful start with Elkanah scoring their first goal within the first five minutes. Wynberg fought back with a great pass from Kelsey Lodewyk to Farah Isaacs who scored our first goal. There were many short corners against us which put the defenders under pressure but they were successful in preventing any goals. With five minutes to go Elkanah scored their second goal to win the match 2-1. Our player of the match was awarded to Zara Ally.

U16C vs Westerford

The first match coming back from the June holidays was played in good spirits, but was unfortunately a defeat  1-0. Wynberg’s defence was strong and we managed to keep Westerford out of our ‘D’ for most of the match. We appreciate the help we got from the U/16D seeing as a few of our players were not able to play.We need to work on our communication and fitness and we look forward to the matches of the rest of the season.

U16D vs Westerford

The U16D team had not lost a game in the previous term, so the team put a lot of pressure on themselves to try keep their unbeaten record. There was a great deal of tension, which only escalated when Westerford scored their first goal. After half- time, Westerford maintained the pressure and despite our goalie’s best efforts, Westerford managed to sneak in another goal. Our Wynberg team dug deep into their reserves and few minutes before the final whistle, we scored a goal! But it was a little too late and, with the final score at 1-2, we learnt that winning is not everything, but that we will work hard to get back to our winning ways.

U16 E

Final score 0-4. We had a couple of very new beginners playing in our team this week. They played very well for the first time. The team now needs to put into practice what they have learnt with tackling, passing to one another and just building on confidence. They seemed to enjoy the game . The goalie, Aneeqah Davids, played extremely well. She was good under pressure.
