Hockey vs Tour Team: King’s High

On Friday the 31st July, Wynberg played hockey against a touring team from Warwick called King’s High. The u16A and 1st team both played matches against them and gave great performances. The weather was great for the games and the sun even peeked out from behind the clouds. The matches kicked off right after school with great excitement and enthusiasm.

The first team played a great game and showed that they really do have something special in them. The atmosphere amongst the team was wonderful to see and the team were in a good space before the match. Due to the match being against a touring team, they had nothing to lose and went onto the pitch and did everything but lose. They managed to beat their opposition 6-1 and left the turf with heads held high, reminiscing about moments in the game which gave rise to some laughs and a wonderful team atmosphere. The team managed to really get in some short corner experience and managed to score three goals from their short corner opportunities. Overall two goals were scored by Chelsea Manoek, two by Kayla Morgan, one by Sasha Sivertsen and one by Jamie Southgate. Credit must go to the whole team who played incredibly well together and lined up amazing balls so that their players could get on the end of them and score. The team is to be congratulated on their victory.

In League fixtures:

1st Team

The sun was shining and the skies were clear, a perfect day to play the much loved game of hockey. On Saturday the 1st August Wynberg challenged it out against Pinelands High School on the hockey field and certainly showed Pinelands what they were made out of.  The first team had a cracker of a match and played their hearts out and pushed through the tough parts, pulling together as a team. Every player ran their hardest and put their best stick forward. In the beginning of the match there were some signs that the team’s energy levels needed to be picked up and Pinelands managed to capitalise on this lack of energy to get the first goal in the box against the run of play. The Wynberg girls were determined not to let this get them down and fought harder. In the first half of the game the girls didn’t always stick to the game plan but redeemed themselves in the second half, fighting back to fix anything that they let slip as the game just flowed and they linked up incredible balls and passes to each other. The final score of the game was 3-1 to Wynberg, with two goals scored by Tamsyn Gaynor – the player of the match. The first goal came from a cross from Steph Lopes-Stuart across the circle. Tamsyn’s first touch on that cross looped up in the air and she volleyed it into the net. The 2nd goal came from another cross that Tamsyn buried in the box – both goals attributed to an enormous team effort in the build-up. The third goal was scored by Sasha Sivertsen, drag-flicking the ball into the goals during a short corner opportunity. The team continue to move up the log and we are looking forward to some more strong performances from this team.

On Saturday the u16A team played against Pinelands. We got off to a very good start by achieving our objective of an early goal. The first goal came from a tap in from Banele Plaatjies and our second goal was scored by Amy Arendse, who also scored our third goal, which was scored in the second half. Nikki Mlumbi had a very good game at right back, making sure that Pinelands couldn’t build an attack on our right channel. The 3(2)-0 result puts the team on a 3 match winning streak.

The U16B’s had an excellent match against Pinelands on Saturday. The girls worked extremely well as a team and this translated into seven goals and a very happy coach! The first half saw Wynberg up 5-0. Kelsey Lodewyk scored 3 of these goals, assisted for one of them by Megan Gierdien on post; and two by Kauthar Gameeldien. The second half was slightly slower than the first and Pinelands put up a good fight. Kelsey scored a further two goals, both off short corners, to win the match for Wynberg at 7-0. The players of the match were Zara Ally and Kelsey Lodewyk.

The Match on the 1st of August against U16/C Pinelands was played exceptionally well and we won 2-0. Our communication has improved and we are learning to work well as a team. The first goal was scored in the first half of the game by Zandi Kwaza during an attacking short corner. The second was a brilliant deflection by Sarah Lee during the second half of the game. Our defence was a bit sloppy but it’s nothing we can’t fix by working hard at it. Player of the match is Kyra Seiler for great sportsmanship and always helping out a player in need.

Score – Wynberg lost 4:0 .

Woman of the match: Yusra Booley

The girls played a good game today, considering that they were playing an U16D team. However, they need to improve on not bunching around the ball. Chloe Scholtz deserves special mention as she played a particularly good game and defended well. Coach Daniel nominated Yusra Booley as the woman of the match as she is new to the team and played well considering this. Yusra is one of three new girls to the team, so we have some completely inexperienced but enthusiastic players. The girls played with good team spirit today and attendance at practices and games are improving!

The U14A hockey team beat Pinelands 1-0 on Saturday 1 August. Although the score should have been a lot higher, the team stuck to the game plan and the goal eventually came through a short corner by Aaminah Domingo. After the heavy loss from the week before the team were determined to put up a better showing which they duly did. They kept their structure well and played some lovely passing hockey which was a pleasure to watch. Well done to the team on a job well done and especially to Aaminah Domingo, who was player of the match.
