1st Team

On Saturday the 8th of August, Wynberg’s first hockey team played an intense match against Reddam. The match was played at Reddam and the astro turf was surrounded by beautiful mountains and clear blue skies, wonderful surroundings for a much enjoyed game of hockey. The starting whistle blew and there was high intensity from the get go. The game was action packed and was a game that truly showcased what our first team has to offer.

The way the team played showed a good structure and team effort, working well together to achieve a unified goal. Every player gave it their all. There were some first-rate leads, where girls were like little bolts of lightning, getting in front of their players and winning the ball. The linking up worked well and the team as a unit are learning where and when to release the ball and will continually seek to better themselves. The end score of the match was a 2-2 draw. Wynberg was winning for a large portion of the match until towards the end when a short corner was awarded to Reddam, who managed to hit a great ball into the box, equalising the scoreboard. Wynberg’s two goals were scored by Tasneem Rawoot and Jenna Grey. They were determined and fought had to get the ball in, a truly effective combination. Shifting to the other side of the field, the goalie, Valeshka Harku, made some great saves during the game and blocked many a ball.

The team has come a long way since the beginning of the season and still have much to learn but seeing the progress that they have made is rather exciting.
