On Monday the 10th of August Wynberg’s First Hockey team competed in the last day of the SPAR Champ of Champs Hockey tournament, after qualifying by beating De Kuilen and DF Malan in previous rounds. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this ongoing tournament and were very impressed with the way it was run and set up. The team played in the first match of the day against Paarl Gim, a challenging opposition and the eventual winners of the Knockout tournament.

With the first blow of the whistle, it was game on. It was a tough match for Wynberg as Paarl Gim came out strong, with admirable ball-speed and aggressive attacking and scored a goal early on in the game. They scored another goal in the first half, resulting in a 2-0 lead at half time. The second half brought a far better game from Wynberg and they managed to play better hockey, gaining more possession through the defence-piercing passes of Jamie Southgate, Sasha Sivertsen, Chelsea Manoek and Steph Lopes-Stuart. Unfortunately, however, their opposition managed to score from a drag-flick at a short corner opportunity. This resulted in a 3-0 loss to Wynberg at the end of the match. Despite the loss the team had some great turnovers and game plays, especially in the second half. They managed to rectify mistakes made and built on them, upgrading moves and skills. This was an important lesson for the girls to learn and they will certainly take more lessons out of this match to implement in their future matches. This cannot be considered a true loss as so much was gained from many valuable lessons learnt.

Congratulations to Sasha Sivertsen and Maree Petersen who were nominated as Players of the Match by the organisers of the Spar Tournament.
