1st Team

On Friday the 21st August, Wynberg Girls’ first hockey team challenged Rustenburg in an intense match. Unfortunately, after a fast and challenging first half Wynberg was 1-0 down but the team held their own and played some great hockey during the second half. They made great passes, leads and they put their bodies on the line, never giving up.

Despite all the effort that the team put in, especially in the second half, the end result was unfortunately 2-0 to Rustenburg. This match was a great learning curve for the team and they are sure to make a strong come back.

3rd Team

The 3rd team played against Rustenberg’s 3rd team at the Wynberg astro.  Sadly, the score was 8-0 to Rustenberg. The girls played a hard game and continued to keep their spirits high and showed impeccable sportsmanship.  The Rustenberg team showed high intensity and fitness when our team lacked it. We have one more match of the season and hope that the girls will be able to improve and give it there all.

Score – 1:1

Player of the match – Kayla Arendse

The U16B girls played well against tough competition. It was a tight, excitement filled game. Kauthar Gameeldien scored the only goal for Wynberg.

U16D hockey team played Rustenburg U16D. Caris Gertzen was captain for the match:

We were starting to worry when we saw the previous games’ scores. Rustenburg generally was winning by 3 or 4 goals.  But as we warmed up, our coach reminded us that we had drawn with Herschel when all the other teams had lost. This gave the team a glimmer of hope. Rustenburg won the toss and chose to play towards the rugby field while Wynberg started with the ball. And so, as the U16D Wynberg Girls’ High School team got ready to play, we were not as apprehensive as before. The first half went quite quickly with Wynberg scoring a goal early on. But, soon after, Rustenburg equalised the score to 1 all. The game became quite intense, even with one of our team mates gaining a head injury – that we hope will heal soon. In the game there were some very close moments; close scoring and close defending, but in the end, we stayed with original score of 1 all.

Score – 0:7 loss

Player of the match – Chloe Scholtz

The U16E girls played very well in the first half – their defense was good and Rustenburg managed to only score one goal. There was also a noticeable improvement in the girls’ technicality and skill. However, Rustenburg came back hard and strong in the second half scoring 6 goals. We had no subs and so the girls’ fitness levels turned out to be a problem.

The U14A Hockey Team drew 1-1 to Rustenburg on Saturday 22 August. The team played some excellent hockey in the first 10 minutes of the first half. They put lots of pressure on the Rustenburg defence but were unfortunately unable to score. A lapse in concentration and bad marking resulted in a goal for Rustenburg.  This demoralised the team a bit.  A positive talk at half time and hard work by all, eventually led to a great goal being scored by Michelle Boshoff. A great fight back by the team – well done girls.
