2nd Team vs Belville

On Saturday we played Belville and drew the match 1-1. We dominated the first half, Sarah scoring the goal in the first 15 minutes. We unfortunately let them score owing to our being a little less fit than the opponents. Our team will be working on our fitness more regularly to avoid tiredness coming easily in the second half of the game. Our players of the match this week are Sarah and Vicky.

U16A vs Belville
This Saturday was a very cold and stormy morning but that didn’t stop the Wynberg team starting off on a high note, winning a short corner within the first two minutes of the game. However they did not convert their opportunities and were made to pay when they went 1-0 down following a break away attack from Belville. Just before the half time whistle, Wynberg were able to level the score through Jaymee Henderson who put a rebound ball in the back of the box. In the second half, the Wynberg team trusted the process and started playing as a unit, stringing some beautiful passes together. After some well constructed build up play down the right hand side of the field, a ball was passed into the circle for Zoe Koff who converted, putting Wynberg ahead.  Wynberg played with a great spirit, team unity and fought hard to come back from 1-0 down to win the game 2-1. We’re very proud of the team effort that was shown: promising hockey is started to be played by this team. Well done to Logan Patel for being player of the match.

U16B vs Curro
The U16B team played a team from Curro. The girls played very well considering the howling gale they had to play in. They won 5-0. Goals were scored by Jessica Botha, Jenna Featherstone, Farah Jacobs and two by Megan Gierdien. The girls put some of the coaching they have had to good effect, trying some new skills and working on the structure of their game. A well-deserved win.

u16C  vs Belville
The u16C’s held their own against a strong u16 Bellville team who turned out to be a B side. The fact that no goals were scored is testament to WGHS’s team’s determination and strong defending. We did take most of the first half to
a) defrost, owing to apocalyptic conditions,
b) remember our positions and to use the line rather than passing across our goals.
But the second half showed that the girls were gaining confidence and co-ordination. We need to work on fitness levels, and ball management, but we are seeing continued growth. U16C drew 0-0 with Bellville on Saturday morning.

u14B vs Belville
We won 1-0 against Belville. Demi Fester was player of the match.

u14C vs Belville
U14 C hockey won 5-0! The first half was quite scrappy and we scored 1 goal. The  2nd half was much better – as the team played together and passed well.
