1st Team

This crunch game started with much promise as Jamie Southgate put Wynberg ahead early in the game with a comprehensive shot off a short corner rebound. The Wynberg side continued to hold the game steady and looked dominant but were unluckily penalised in their defensive circle. Stellenberg equalised with a massive short corner straight shot. The teams went into half time at 1-1 and came out determined to capitalise on their opportunities. An unfortunate penalty corner decision again put Wynberg on the back-foot as Stellenberg slammed home an excellent short corner combination.  The never-say-die Wynberg lionesses continued to fight for possession in a very physical game. Special mention must be made of Steph Lopes-Stuart who refused to accept defeat and worked hard for every ball.  Stellenberg also realised the danger of Wynberg’s counter-attack and worked harder to seal their lead, which they did in the last few minutes of the game.  A hard fought game from both sides and an excellent game of hockey to watch.

2nd Team

The second team had a tough, defensive game on Friday against Stellenberg. Even though it was a tough 6-0 loss, we learnt many communication and defensive skills. Our player of the match this week was definitely Tamsyn Gaynor, who despite being hit in the face, continued to play extremely well. A special mention to Vicky Efort, who had huge amounts of pressure during the game.

3rd Team

On Friday (6th June) the thirds played against Stellenberg High School. It was clear that Stellenberg was the better team on the day , walking away with a 6-0 win. Scoring 4 goals in the first half and 2 in the second. The thirds did play better in the second half, pushing a bit harder and trying to get more possession, but were not able to stop them from scoring. There are many things to work on but keep trying and don’t give up girls .

Stellenberg have always been tough opposition and they proved just that on Friday evening. Wynberg took a while to settle into the game and were made to play at the pace that Stellenberg dictated. After an equal share of possession in the early part of the first half, Stellenberg took control and managed to keep the ball away from Wynberg. Not too long after this domination, Stellenberg opened the score line, scoring from scrappy defensive play and a loose ball in the circle. This seemed to light the fire underneath Wynberg as they equalised within the next minute, scoring an open goal which was once again as a result of good build up play down the right hand side by Zoe Koff and finished off by Jaymee Henderson. After half time, Wynberg worked very hard at keeping possession and playing their own game, the defense took control and allowed for good build up from the back. After being awarded numerous short corners, Wynberg managed to convert the last one through Logan Patel who took a straight shot off the top of the circle. The last 5 minutes were very tight as Stellenberg kept pushing for the equaliser, but Wynberg managed to hold out to win the match 2-1. Well done to the girls who are really starting to work together and as a unit.

The U16B hockey team beat Stellenberg 2-0. The girls played very well, creating many scoring opportunities. They eventually put two goals in the box, however it could have been a lot more. They played good passing hockey – it was a lovely game to watch. Goals were scored by Amy Arendse and Banele Plaatjies.

U14B
Wynberg won 1-0. The girls had a great game on Friday, definitely playing better as a team in the second half of their match. The goal was scored by Megan Ingram after a great pass from Zandi Kwaza. The players of the match were Karen Roodman and Demi Fester.
