1st Team

The rain came down for the 1st Team fixture against Herschel on Saturday at Wynberg and created difficult conditions for both teams throughout the course of the game. Wynberg started the game strong and held their own against a powerful Herschel line-up. Both teams had a few opportunities but Herschel were able to convert more of their build-up attacks into shots at goal. Valeshka Harkhu was once again solid in the Wynberg goals, pulling out a number of top-drawer saves to keep the Wynberg team in the game. But the home team’s inability to keep possession in key areas of the field would end up costing us a goal and we struggled to upgrade in the attacking 25 area resulting in the final score being 0-1. Nevertheless, a brave performance from the Wynberg team who must be commended on holding their own and never giving up.

2nd Team

The second team had a rocky start to thes term, losing to Herschel, 6-0. After a physically demanding first half and a structural talk from our coach, we went into the second half determined to score atleast one goal. Even though we did not score ,we played strong and hard during the second half.

3rd Team

On Saturday (26 July) the 3rds played Herschel once again. Herschel dominated in the first half scoring twice, but Wynberg refused to give up. The first half ended with Wynberg loosing their goal keeper Kiara Homan due to medical problems, but luckily for Wynberg Robyn Lee Roberts was willing to take her place for the second half.

The 3rds pushed harder in the second half but it was just not their day,and Herschel walked away with a 5-0 win.  Well done girls for not giving up!

The U16A side lost 2-0 on Saturday.  Players of the match:  Chelsea van der Berg and Nikiwe Mlumbi who were both stars in the defence and thwarted many Herschel attacks. The opposition displayed a greater desire to win the ball and were more clinical in their passing then Wynberg and were deserved winners.

The U16B team beat Herschel 1-0 on Saturday. The team scored early in the match through a well worked penalty corner. They then defended exceptionally well to keep their 1-0 advantage. The team did not play negatively but were put under a lot of pressure by Herschel. Sisi Dingeni, the goalkeeper had an excellent match making some great saves. Well done girls on an excellent win.

U16D Hockey girls played a very good match with a positive and enthusiastic outlook. Despite losing the match 3-0 to Herschel, the girls played their best in the miserable weather.

A goal scored by Jenna Grey late in the first half put Wynberg ahead at the break.  The victory was then sealed when Maree Petersen scored late in the second half.

Player of the match: Cayleigh Hanekom (goal keeper)

The cold and wet conditions on Saturday morning were a challenge for the U14B’s but it did little to deter their spirit during their match against Herschel. The first half saw Herschel score an early goal, which we matched soon into the second half. This first goal for Wynberg was scored by a great pass from Demi Fester to Kayla Arendse who popped it over the line to much cheer. With improved structure in play in the second half we managed to take the lead with a goal from Jamie-Lee Crowie. Unfortunately Herschel made their way into our half with seven minutes to go to score their second goal. The match was tied 2-2. A great effort from all the girls. Player of the match was awarded to Demi Fester.
