On Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th May Wynberg played intense hockey matches against a tough oppostition, Stellenberg.

1st Team

The first team played an extremely competitive match on Saturday and unfortunately lost 2-1. Stellenberg manged to score their goals early in the half leaving the score 2-0 at the end of the first half. Wynberg had some great build ups and were determined to fight back with all they had, which was clearly visible, especially in the second half. The second half was a much better half for Wynberg and they took advantage of a short corner, where Katherine Nicholls scored their goal.

It was a tough physical game where both teams had great turnovers and tackles. Wynberg had some great opportunities in the opposition’s circle with some very close deflections. They will be working extremely hard to improve their game and build themselves up as a team.

3rd Team

Saturday the 30th May the 3rd team played a home game against Stellenberg. The score was 3-0 to the opposition. The rain made it difficult for the team to communicate well. We didn’t have a very bad game but we could have played to our full potential. Two of the 3 goals we shouldn’t have let in but unfortunately Stellenberg made it past our defence line. Better luck next time girls.

Under 16A

Today’s match with the under 16 girls was a true indication of how far we have come. The team work spirit and skills have improved dramatically, due to consistent perseverance seen in every practice. Our first half started off rocky but with some encouragement and constructive feedback we came onto the field ready for the second half, and drew, which for our third match is seen as a win in my eyes. The dedication seen from the girls has truly paid off and I would like to thank the girls as well as the parents for their dedication to the sport from the early mornings to late afternoons. We are only improving with every match, and due to this I am looking forward to next week’s game.

Under 16B

The u16B team had an excellent match against Stellenberg on Saturday. The girls played to their strengths as a team and there were some great shots at goal. Two goals were scored in the first half- the first by Kauthar Gameeldien closely followed by one from Megan Gierdien. Stellenberg managed to score off a short corner against us to make it 2-1 at half time. The pace in the second half was slower but Farah Isaacs had a great cross shot, which made the final score 3-1. A very well done to both teams. Jamie Crowie was awarded our player of the match.

Under 16D

On Saturday 30 May, the u16D team played against Stellenberg. We played very well and had possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. In the second half, we played better as a team and we had plenty of opportunities to score. Chelsea van Heerden scored a goal making her our woman of the match. Our defense was incredible. They managed to get every ball out of the circle and our outstanding goalkeeper didn’t let any thing get within range of the goals. All in all it was an action-filled match and the final score was 1-0 in our favour. In future we could possibly work on our goal scoring accuracy and strategies for short corners.

Under 14A

The U14A hockey team lost 1-0 to Stellenberg on Saturday 30 May. Unfortunately this score line does not truly reflect the way the team performed. Wynberg dominated possession, played some lovely hockey but just couldn’t finish off the many opportunities they created. The team executed their defensive roles more effectively. They switched the play well providing good ball to the links and forwards. The strikers put themselves into good scoring positions but tended to panic when in front of the goals. Hunger in the circle was lacking at times, but never heart. Keep up the good work girls, however, as Ms Hudson-Windsor says, make sure you learn from your mistakes.
