On Thursday the 20th August, Wynberg’s past hockey players and current first team battled it out to see who would win this year’s title for the annual Old Girls’ hockey match. The match was not only a fantastic game, where the first team gave the old girls a run for their money, but it was also a lot of fun all round.
The old girls team had a great mix of players, from those who are no longer playing competitive hockey, to provincial players, to a Springbok hockey player! The game was on from the blow of the first whistle. The first team held their own and played some great hockey during this match. They made great leads, passes, shots at goal and frequently found themselves in the old girls’ half.
Despite a great effort from the first team, at half time they were unfortunately 2-0 down. However, they wouldn’t go down without a fight. During the second half of the game they continued to fight and push hard to make their desired comeback. After a strong build up, Jenna Grey managed to score a great goal, bringing the score up to 1-2, which was the final result of the match. The girls had a fantastic time on the field, under the flood lights and enjoyed a fun, yet competitive, game of hockey.
This match will definitely be remembered in the years to come as an incredible experience, where much was learnt. And who knows, maybe next year’s first team will walk away with the trophy from their match against the old girls.
