This was probably one of the best performances of the season from the 1st Team as they took on a well-respected Springfield team at Herschel Indoor centre. The Wynberg team dominated from the start, with Erin Prince, Steph Lopes-Stuart, Sasha Sivertson, Jamie Southgate and their captain, Nicole Alexander playing in perfect synch with each other. Our goalkeeper, Valeshka Harkhu, was in solid form at the back, allowing for the team to pass with confidence and determination. The build-up of their attacking play was constructive and well-conceived and the explosive running from the strikers provided a number of early opportunities that had the opposition on the back foot from the get-go.

Wynberg earned themselves a short corner, which our drag flicker, Sasha buried in the net. Not satisfied with just a one goal lead against last year’s league winner, the Wynberg team pushed for another goal and were rewarded when an excellent cross from the right was picked up by Jamie and slotted into the box.

There were a few moments of lapse in concentration which allowed Springfield to come back into the game to score their goal, but the team knuckled down and through the excellent defensive saves from Valeshka, the team achieved a richly deserved 2-1 win by keeping out 2 last minute short corners from the Springfielders.

2nd Team vs Springfield 2nd Team
What promised to be a fast-paced game between two very strong teams, proved to be a real battle on the court. Both teams has scoring opportunities but both goalkeepers denied the strikers a numerous occasions. Cara Geere, the 2nd Team captain, launched many an attacking movement, ably assisted by Chelsea Manoek, Berzilee Pipes, Robyn Burrows and Logan Patel. Valeshka Harkhu was in dominant form in the goals and it was indeed a game of 2 goalkeepers. Eventually, Springfield were the first to capitalise on a goalmouth scramble after a number of saves, as the ball unluckily deflected off our defender, past Valeshka. In a last minute gamble to try equalise, we took V off and replaced her with an extra player, but Springfield pounced on an intercepted ball and took advantage of the empty goal.

This was most certainly a hard-fought game, with 100% effort from every player on the park.
