1st team vs Fairmont 1st

Intense start to the game with Wynberg on the attack from the starting whistle. Fairmont fought back and managed to hold us off but eventually the Wynberg team got their first short corner and a number of corners followed in quick succession. Steph Lopes-Stuart was unlucky not to convert but the Fairmont goalie was somehow stopping the Wynberg attack on all fronts. Eventually Wynberg breach her defence and Cara Geere is able to convert a well-worked corner.

Sasha Sivertsen scored the second goal after the goalie was drawn out and beaten by the player. Wynberg continued to apply huge pressure and while Fairmont attempted to get back in the game, the stronger Wynberg side refused to allow them the chance and kept up their relentless pressure. After yet another attack on the Fairmont defensive, the Wynberg Indoor Captain, Nicole Alexander, converted a sneaky short corner.

Well done to the Wynberg team on their 3-0 win.

2nd team vs Fairmont

Wynberg started off well, attacking with enthusiasm and were unlucky not to convert some chances at goal. The game was a back and forth affair with both teams turning quickly from defense to attack.

After some strong hockey from both sides, Fairmont are the first on the board with a goal.

Chelsea Manoek made a break down the middle of the court and earned a short corner for her efforts. She displays some beautiful stick skills and converts to even the score.

Fairmont was awarded a penalty flick after Robyn Burrows made a brave save in front of the goals, but the shot was not on target. They did manage to convert a shot at goal a few minutes later after a lapse in the Wynberg defense.

The Wynberg did not give up fighting and continued to play with heart. With one minute remaining, the coach took Valeshka Harkhu, the goalie, off and replaced her with an extra player to try score the equaliser. The team were so close to scoring but just couldn’t finish which resulted in a 1-2 loss. They should be proud of their efforts and I am sure they are going to go from strength to strength.

3rd Team vs Bergvliet 1st

A slightly unfair match for their first game of the season. The Bergvliet 1st Team had 2 top schools players in their side and proved to be far too strong for the young Wynberg 3rds. Nevertheless, the team dug deep and after they found their rhythm, were able to put some strong counter-attacks together. They applied good pressure throughout the game and earned a number of short corners.

Chelsea Manoek converted a cracker past the goalkeepers ear, while Sisi Dingeni bravely protected the Wynberg goals, pulling off some excellent aerial saves. Solid performances from Rachel Lassen and Amber Bailey.

4th Team vs Fairmont 3rds

Wynberg looked a little unsettled from the get go having been put under pressure from the start from Fairmont. We were on the back foot but soaked up the pressure really well considering the brilliant interchange play that was happening between the Fairmont team. We conceded our first goal after 5 minutes and from there the Wynberg team struggled to settle down and get into a rhythm. Unfortunately the game did not go Wynberg’s way but the girls persevered and never gave up, everyone tried their best until the final whistle. A young team with lots to learn and they are already looking forward to their fixture next week.
