Jazz Band Wows the Crowd at Waterfront Band Slam 2015

On Friday 13 March, Wynberg Girls’ High Jazz Band competed in the Waterfront Band Slam Final, alongside Settlers’ High School and Wynberg Boys’ High School. The three bands had been chosen for the final after a first round involving nine other schools. There were two prizes up for grabs – the prize for the best spirit and the prize for best band of the evening. Both Wynberg schools absolutely wowed the crowd that had gathered at the Waterfront Ampitheatre to support them. This year was our band’s second consecutive year in the final round of the competition and they had been rehearsing every day after school in the week leading up to the Band Slam, to ensure they were ready to give a performance that neither the crowd, nor the band itself would forget.

Our jazz band was nervous to be the first group to perform, but really got the crowd on their feet with hits like Shake it Off, I Will Survive, Uptown Funk and more. It seemed that all their hard work and time spent in rehearsals, perfecting their set and some dance moves, had all paid off. The band and its leader, Ms Pearce, were ecstatic with how their set was received by the crowd and truly appreciated the amount of support for their band at the event. One of the band members was heard saying that it was so much easier and enjoyable to perform for an enthusiastic and responsive crowd of supporters, many of whom were friends and families of the band. Boys’ High and Settlers’ High continued to maintain the high standard of performance for the duration of the competition, which had the crowd divided in their opinions of who would be winning which prize later that evening.

After the judges had had some time to discuss the pending results of the competition, there was a huge sense of anticipation and excitement in the crowd as MC, Danilo Aquisto, appeared to announce the results everyone was waiting for. Settlers’ High’s Band won first prize, and Wynberg Girls’ High won the prize for the best spirit and support for the duration of the competition – for the second time! There was a definite feeling of #wynbergpride as the band and their supporters celebrated together in the crowd.

A huge congratulations to the band for performing at such a high standard and flying the Wynberg flag high and to the many supporter who turned up in their numbers to support the band!
