Lauren Gildenhuys receives the Golden Lion Award

Lauren receives the Golden Lion Award for the following reasons:

The Golden Lion is a well-deserved final award during the time Lauren has spent at Wynberg Girls’ High School. A person who has involved herself in every aspect of the school, she has given exemplary service as the Head of School this year, willingly and enthusiastically going beyond the call of duty.

Lauren has a very good general knowledge and she has been an exceptional Head of the Public Speaking and Forum Society. Lauren has also participated in a number of external competitions as a speaker and performed commendably. She has a sharp, analytical mind and has the ability to present her arguments cogently in well-structured and eloquent prose. She has often been recognised for the depth of her thoughtful and inspiring presentations, and she was chosen to address educators at the recent National Teachers’ Awards ceremony. In 2010 she was placed 11th in the National Public Speaking and Debating Competition. Lauren is a talented actress and has received a diploma for her South African drama college examinations each time. She has also received a Gold Diploma in the De Beers English Olympiad.

Academically, Lauren has excelled and has always been in the top three of her grade. It is, however, for an extraordinary academic achievement for which Lauren is recognised this morning. Her profound insight and marked intelligence, her willingness to challenge and to question, saw her embrace the opportunity to study both History and English Language and Literature University of Cambridge AS Levels concurrently with the Western Cape Education Department syllabus. Attaining 91% for English and 93% for History, a double A in these international examinations, she achieved first position in South Africa in both these subjects.

Her continued hard work in her academic programme and her commitment to her school was recognised frequently and at the Matric Prize Giving she received:
