On Saturday the 12th of September, the 1st hockey team and the u16A team played in an intense PGSGU interschools’ tournament. It was a great day for the tournament and all of the girls thoroughly enjoyed their matches and played their hearts out, showing what they have in them.

1st Team

The first team played four matches, playing both the first and last matches of the tournament.  They drew to both Herschel and Springfield with a score of 0-0. They beat St Cyprians 1-0 and unfortunately lost 2-1 against Rustenburg. The team really and truly gave it all they had. They showed their oppositions what they were made of and played some amazing hockey. The games were intense and filled with excitement. There were many suspense-filled minutes and the team must be commended on their play. Their best match of the tournament, and arguably of the season, was against Herschel where they split the seams and dominated the match. Herschel only made a couple of circle entries and the team had most of the possession during the game.

The way the team played at this tournament showed just how far they have come as a team this season. They went through challenging patches where they pushed through and grew as a team. The level at which the team played at this tournament showed just how much they have improved. The season was a remarkable journey and we are looking forward to see where the team goes next season.

On Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of September the u16A team participated in the annual PGSGU u16 Hockey tournament. The team played their first, and only match for Friday, against Sans Souci. Although the game started slowly and we took a while to score a goal, once the first was scored, goals started to flow. We won that game 5-0 with goals from Rebecca Franklin, Saarah Smith x2 and Amy Arendse x2. Saturday started off with a 2-0 loss to Herschel , followed by a very tense match against Rustenburg. We scored early in that game with a great ball in by Isobel Evans which was deflected in at the post by Amy, possibly our goal of the season. Unfortunately we just couldn’t hold the lead and Rustenburg managed to score with 2 minutes remaining, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Shortly after we faced Springfield and managed to keep out their attacks and finished with a 0-0 draw. Our last game of the tournament was against St Cyprians, the result of this game was quite important as it determined where a few teams finished. With 3 minutes left on the clock Saarah managed to score the winning goal through a shot from top D. This result meant that Wynberg finished 3rd out of 6. The team has improved so much throughout the season and have had many of the opposition’s parents commenting on their progress

There was nervous anticipation in the U14 camp as the first game of the tournament drew nearer. First up was St Cyprians who had beaten us fairly convincingly in the league. The team played very well and had a number of scoring opportunities which they were unable to convert. Unfortunately this trend seemed to follow the team through the tournament as they went on to draw to both Springfield and Herschel. The girls beat San Souci 3-0 and then lost in their last match against Rustenburg. The highlight of the tournament was the match against Herschel where although it was a draw it felt like a win. In the league we had been comprehensively beaten and outplayed by Herschel and yet this match, although we defended a lot of the time, we definitely held our own. Although the team’s overall result was a little disappointing, the hockey played by our very special U14A team this tournament showed a lot of courage and commitment. Their improvement both as individuals and as a team were huge, and it was a pleasure to watch them play. Well done girls on an excellent effort. Don’t forget all the good things you have learnt this season.
