The 2017 Interschools’ tennis tournament took place on Saturday 11 March at Rustenburg Girls High School. WGHS was represented in the senior section by Katherine Nicholls, Savannah Wiegand, Isobel Evans and Erin Harris. Unfortunately, one of the senior girls was unwell and so Wynberg was unable to field a third senior couple. In the junior section, Jessi Springorum, Asheleigh Moyce, Caylee Nel and Jess Cooke participated for WGHS.

The morning began promptly at 08:00. The weather was lovely and there wasn’t a breath of wind. Wynberg’s first fixture was  against St Cyprians and thereafter, the girls played Rustenburg, Springfield and Herschel. Each match consisted of seven games.

The girls all tried their very best and showed great amounts of tenacity. Our junior girls were in a really tough section with some very talented opponents, and so we congratulate them on their efforts. The girls never stopped trying and they are to be commended for their fighting spirt.

Our senior couples did slightly better and managed to get a few games in some of their fixtures. Very well done to Isobel Evans and Erin Harris for being the only Wynberg team to win a fixture as they beat Springfield 4-3. Katherine and Savannah narrowly lost to Springfield 4-3 after some closely contested points. Although the scores weren’t always the best, the girls had some good rallies and interesting matches.

Wynberg placed 5th in both the senior and junior sections, whilst Herschel narrowly beat St Cyprian’s School to claim first place. It takes a lot of courage to play against some of the opposition the girls faced and our WGHS tennis players deserve a very big round of applause. The tournament also served as the final time the Matrics, Isobel, Savannah and Katherine will represent Wynberg on the tennis court. It was a lovely way to end off 5 years’ worth of tennis and we look to see the WGHS tennis team grow from strength to strength in the future.
