Hockey stick1st Team

On Saturday 21 May, Wynberg Girls’ First team took on long term rivals Springfield in a long-awaited clash. The girls were ready and had their game faces on, even at 7am on what was a cool, crisp morning.

The girls’ game began high-paced and dominant, but much to Wynberg’s disappointment, they missed slotting a few opening balls in on the far post which were given in cleanly by Sasha Sivertsen and Jamie Southgate. Springfield were on the back foot as Wynberg played a strong game of hockey against the Blue.Wynberg did not let their heads down even after a quick counter-attack goal by Springfield. They were still in it. Springfield managed to hold off for the rest of the match despite Wynbergs’ attacking mentality and brilliant distribution. Out the back, the links worked well in making connections with the front line namely Amina Williams’ runs, and the strikers movement up front namely Jenna Grey, Kayla Morgan and Raniya Khan.

Ball upon ball slotted across Springfield’s D waiting for a Wynberg stick to get on the end of it. After a game where Wynberg retained most of the possession and played pass and play hockey, it was a huge upset that the scoreline did not reflect the true value Wynberg placed on this very important game.Wynberg can only hope for better things come Herschel on Friday, 3rd June.

U16A report

On Saturday 21 May the u16A hockey team played against Springfield. It definitely wasn’t our best game ever, we tried hard but for some reason nothing came together. The final score was 0-6 to Springfield. We are only going to work even harder as a result of that devastating loss.¬†Player of the match has to be the one who came back from being injured and played with all her heart in whatever position she was told to play. At all times she had a willing smile on her face and was happy to be back on the turf: a very determined young sportswoman is our Megan De Beer
