On the afternoon of Friday 11 February 2017, WGHS 1st tennis team played against Westerford at Cavan Road courts. It was a considerably hot afternoon so everyone made sure to drink plenty of water.

The doubles matches started at 15:00. Katherine Nicholls and Savannah Wiegand, playing no.s 1 and 2 respectively, had a long and contested match. The girls came back from 6-3 down to level the score at 6 all. However, teh opposition managed to narrowly win the next two games resulting in Wynberg losing the match, 8-6. Isobel Evans and Inge Tripod, playing no.s 3 and 4 for Wynberg, pulled off a agreat win and beat their opponents 8-4.

The singles matches then followed with some mixed results. Inge Tripod lost her match 8-5 whilst Isobel Evans pulled off a great win, beating her opponent 8-2. Savannah also unfortunately los ther singles 8-2 and Katherine won her match after her opponent was forced to retire due to an injury.

Each team won 3 matches; however, Westerford won the fixture with 7 points (As they won the A couple doubles) to Wynberg’s 6 points. The girls coped with the heat very well and played some hard tennis. Having lost narrowly twice now the team is sure to pull off a victory very soon.

The WGHS 2nd tennis team consisting of Erin Harris, Nkhensani Baloyi, Megan Farquhar and Jessi Springorm, played a match against Springfield on Friday 11 February. Wynberg unfortubnately lost the fixture. Similarly it was a very hot day and the matches were very well contested on both sides. The heat most definitely did not stop anyone from making some amazing shots and doing their best.

Erin, playing at number 1, lost her singles 8-3 and Nkhensani, playing at number 2, lost hermatch 8-5. Despite their best efforts, the girls also lost their doubles 8-3.Megan and Jessi who were playing 3 and 4 respectively, also suffered defeat in their singles but they had a good doubles match despite losing 8-5.

Although Wynberg was beaten, we congratulate the girls for still trying their best and giving their all. We are very proud of their efforts.
