On the 16th and 17th of April 2016, the under 16A side competed in the Top Schools’ Champion’s Cup which is hosted annually by Rustenburg Girls’ High School.  The competition comprised of 10 schools in the Western Cape who competed in 2 pools with 5 schools in each, with the winners of each pool playing up against each other in the final.

Unfortunately, Wynberg was a bit too eager in the first match against Reddam, missing a lot of opportunities, resulting in a loss of 9-13.  One of our players, Lizzie Ducroq, was also injured due to a bad fall.

The next match was against Westerford High School.  Both teams played a tough game and our girls pulled through ending the game in a draw of 9-9. The last match of the day was a much-needed win for our girls against Somerset College, with a score of 8-5.

The next day, the match against St Cyprians, who were last year’s champions of the tournament, was a tough and highly contested game. Halfway through the game our goal attack, Ashley Timms, landed badly and hurt her ankle resulting in her not being able to finish the match. In the end, we lost by a very close margin of 15-10, resulting in Wynberg playing for 5th and 6th position against Rustenburg. This final match was our girls’ best match of the tournament, as they fought particularly hard for each center pass, with our defense working spectacularly to ensure that Rustenburg didn’t take the lead. Our girls’ hard work paid off, and we finished with a winning score of 16-7!

The tournament was a great experience for our girls, and even though they didn’t win all of their matches, they played great games and displayed amazing sportsmanship both on and off the court. Well done to our U16A netball girls!
