Tour fixtures continued this week, with both Netball and Hockey tour fixtures.

1st Hockey Team vs Zimbabwe U18A

On Sunday morning, the 1st team came out against a strong Zimbabwe side at Wynberg astroturf. The game was played at a good pace and the Zimbabweans played strong structured hockey. They scored early in the game but the Wynberg team soon settled down and started to play solid hockey. The Zim keeper frustrated the Wynberg attackers, but they were relentless in their drives and leads and created a number of scoring opportunities for themselves. The strikers’ performance in this game certainly creates expectation and excitement for the future and it is hoped we will see this kind of aggression and desire for the rest of the season. Eventually the Wynberg efforts paid off and Nicole Alexander equalised with a top class snap-shot from the top D! with seconds to go, the Wynberg side thought they were going to sneak in a win as our striker went one on one with the goalkeeper. But it was not to be and the game ended in a draw.

1st Hockey vs Oakham

The Oakham team proved too strong for the Wynberg team. The tourists made good use of the slightly bouncy pitch and used quick distribution and pace on the ball to slice through the home team’s defence. There were a number of top English county players who showed amazing skill on the ball as they jinked and dazzled past player after player.

Valeshka Harkhu in the goals was once again on top form, impressing the visitors with a number of saves, including saving a penalty stroke. But she was not able to stem the relentless attacks and the tour side score 3 well-worked goals, with a final cracker of a reverse stick shot from top D to beat us 4-0.

U14A Hockey versus Oakham U15 A

Final score: 0-0

Wynberg were in for a tough match against this touring side from the UK, but with a warm winter afternoon and the sun burning bright we had an environmental advantage. The first half consisted of a lot of “ping pong” between the two sides and an early shorty for Oakham. Cayleigh Hanekom managed to keep a scoring shot out and a little later in the half Rebecca Franklin ran the ball into Oakham’s D and took a shot. Sadly this was kept out by the keeper. After a first half where fitness was imperative, the girls were reminded that they needed to keep the ball in order to score.

The second half consisted of more “ping pong” but a lot more time spent in Oakham’s half. Wynberg played with more urgency and although there were a few more scoring opportunities created by Jenna Grey, Oakham’s defenders worked hard to keep them out. The game ended in a hard fought draw between two strong teams.

Player of the match: Kayla Morgan for never giving up.

u19A Netball vs Oakham

On Monday 11 August, our u19A netball team played a match against a touring side from England, Oakham High School. The game had a slow start. Our shooters were consistent, which resulted in Wynberg leading the first quarter (6-3). Wynberg maintained their lead ever so slightly in the second quarter (10-8). By the end of the third quarter, Oakham stepped up their game and evened out the game at 15-15. Wynberg began to tire in the last quarter, and Oakham took full advantage. The final score was 17-27, against us. A disappointing loss but Wynberg played a good game.

Best attacker: Christin Sands

Best defender: Yeukai Chamba

U19B netball vs Oakham

Score: 28 – 14 to WGHS

Best Defender : Lisa van Wyk

Best Attacker : Kayla Budha

Best Shooter: Alex Steyn

Player of the Match = Natalie Winter

Although it was a friendly match and not a league game, the team played hard and maintained a steady lead. We had to play quarters, which we were not used to, but we gave of our best to the end. Each girl played very competitively, chasing every ball and using every opportunity to feed the ball to the shooters. We claimed our victory in the end, producing a great result. Well done!
