Valentine’s Day Assembly 2014

Valentine’s Day at Wynberg Girls’ High School has always been quite a big deal. This year, it was the School Council’s first chance to host an Assembly and they took full advantage of it by using it as an opportunity to just make complete and utter fools of themselves by holding the first ever #wynbergpride Music Awards. Cupido Valentino (Georgia Bailey – Head of School) hosted the event.

The show was started off with a performance of ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You‘ by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons before the four categories were announced: Break Up Songs, Hit Singles, Cupidly Confused and Lovestruck. The School Council was split up into 4 groups of 4 and each group created 4 videos for a category. These resulted in some pretty hilarious footage. In each of the winners’ ‘Thank You’ speeches, they read a list of roses.

The winning artists for each category were:

  • Break Up Songs – Someone Like You (Adele) – played by Leandre Kleynhans (Head of Copenhagen)
  • Hit Singles – Ridin’ Solo (Jason Derulo) – played by Yeukai Chamba (Head of RCL)
  • Cupidly Confused – How To Love (Lil Wayne) – played by Lisa Abrahams (Head of Service)
  • Lovestruck – Baby (Justin Bieber) – played by Robyn Schippers (RCL Representative)

There were then some special awards. For the ‘Best Song Ever’ Award, the One Directionettes won for ‘What Makes You Beautiful‘. Then, because we sort of had something for the boys, the ‘Best Female Group’ went to the Spice Girls for ‘Wannabe‘. For our last category, we had a spin-off on the song ‘Dumb Ways To Die‘ written by our very own Head of Culture Rachel Suttle called ‘Dumb Ways To Dump‘.

After all this excitement, the girls were sent off to collect their roses from the other schools while the School Council cleaned up the Hall to prepare it for the next event. A very enjoyable Valentine’s Day was had by all.
