WYNBERG RECEIVES “TOP SCHOOL” AWARD
The Metropole South Education District held a Matric 2011 Learners’ Awards Ceremony on Friday 27 January to which Wynberg was invited. The District is divided into 7 Circuits and WGHS was named the Top School in Circuit 2 (this circuit includes schools who were named in the Top Twenty schools list of the WCED). Three of our learners were placed in the Top Five of the Circuit: 2nd (Elaine Petersen), 3rd (Christine Forbes) and 4th (Tessa Suttle).  Ten of our learners were placed in the Top Twenty individual places in the whole district! We are exceptionally proud of these girls.
BACK TO SCHOOL FOR GRADE 8 PARENTS
Back to school on the 26th of January at WGHS this year gave all new grade 8 parents a taste of what the first weeks at high school are like. Assemblies, finding classes, lessons, the rewards of good learning and house meetings were some of the experiences planned for them. Apart from the joy of experiencing Wynberg tuition, parents went home with a handful of goodies including Information booklets, fridge magnets with the contact details of their daughter’s house coordinator and tutor as well as parent supporter card.
CREATIVE WRITING COURSE
31 January marked the start of the four-week Creative Writing course with Mrs Sparks. This is a course designed for girls who are interested in writing and who want to improve their writing skills. They meet for an hour every Tuesday in Room K.
HOUSE CHALLENGE – MATHS OLYMPIAD
On the 27th of January 2012, we had our first interhouse Maths Olympiad. With no calculators allowed, the girls seemed a little worried, but with the results that came in, we could see they came over that fear rather quickly! A special congratulations to the winning house over-all, Constantia! Officially known now as the house of Einsteins!
CULTURE

The society has received fabulous information from members of Afritwin for the book being compiled for our Devonport visitors who will be visiting us on 14 February. It is a guide to understanding South African slang, and common South African phrases and terms (in all languages).
MAYNARDVILLE – A COMEDY OF ERRORS
On Monday 30 January, a group of Wynberg girls went to the Maynardville Open Air Theatre to see this year’s Shakespeare production: A Comedy of Errors, directed by Matthew Wild. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the play – it was easy to understand, well-acted and highly amusing

PERFORMANCE OF “AS YOU LIKE IT” AT KIRSTENBOSCH
Last week Friday and Saturday, the 27th and 28th of January, WBAA took part once again in an event organised by the Shakespeare festival. We performed our version of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at their sunrise concert which took place at 7am. The setting was beautiful with the sun rising over the trees and birds singing their morning songs. Our actors and actresses performed with much enthusiasm and did an amazing job. All proceeds made from this event go towards the 2012 Shakespeare Festival which will take place at the Artscape Theatre later this year. Thank you to all who supported this event.
